Koufos, GlenOak eke out victory

CANTON They often defy conventional basketball wisdom.

They regularly surround a 7-foot-2 star with four small guards. They rely on young kids to hit big shots. And they even rely, at times, on 7-2 Kosta Koufos' 3-point marksmanship.

But on nights such as Thursday, it all makes sense for the GlenOak Golden Eagles. The Eagles rallied for a 55-51 win over Warren Harding in the Division I district semifinals at Memorial Civic Center. A crowd of 3,580 watched them make 7-of-9 second-half 3-pointers to get the win.

It sets up a game Stark County fans have waited nearly two years for - GlenOak (20-3) and Perry (13-10) in Saturday's 7:30 p.m. district final. Seven-footers Koufos and Kenny Frease meet for the first time since 2005, as their teams pursue their first district titles in more than a decade.

He reminded everyone why he is one of the nation's best players when Harding built a 34-27 lead early in the third. Koufos then calmly drilled a 3-pointer from the left.

"I just thought I could make the shot, and I was lucky enough to hit the shot when we needed it," said Koufos, who made 4-of-5 3-pointers in scoring 27 points.

I was planning on going to this game, but have one of my own and can't skip it.

It was a great game. Koufos ended up with 27 points & 7 rebounds. He had 17 of his team's 22 points in the first half, but as the game went on, he starting finding his teammates wide open for threes and they delivered (Glen Oak was 11-23 from behind the arc). It was my first time seeing Koufos play and he's as good as advertised. He reminds me of Dirk Nowitski. He can post up (although he didn't dunk, but I'm sure that he can), set up his own shot, and handle the ball very well for a player his size. He's not the most physical player on defense (Damian Eargle & Chris Henderson combined for 34 points & 23 rebounds; Henderson even dunked on him), but he is a very gifted player to say the least. The Buckeyes are getting a great one.

Clash of the Titans
Saturday, March 10, 2007
By TODD PORTER

Broken feet and broken faces kept them apart. Luck, teammates and fate have brought them together. The toughest ticket in town is gone, and Memorial Civic Center will rock tonight.

Kosta Koufos and Kenny Frease. Big men, big personalities and bigger potential.

Two of the best high school basketball players in the country live in our backyard. To have two 7-footers who live 15 minutes apart, play in the same league and have college coaches salivating, is rare.

They've never played a high school game against each other since becoming 7-footers.

Until tonight. This is a once-in-a-lifetime game.

Perry and GlenOak will play for the Division I district championship. It is the most anticipated individual matchup since McKinley's Nick Weatherspoon led the Bulldogs past Marlington and 7-footer Luke Witte in the 1969 district title game.

A media panel from the district named GlenOak 7-foot-2 senior Kosta Koufos and Louisville 6-7 senior Dan Boudler boys players of the year in Division I and II, respectively. Hoover 5-11 junior forward Brittany Orban shared the honor in girls Division I.

Koufos hopes to lead GlenOak to its first district title in 11 years when the Golden Eagles play Perry tonight. The Ohio State recruit is coming off a career-best four 3-pointers in a district semifinal win. He averages 26 points and 16 rebounds a game.

Buzz unlike any other for county boys basketball
Sunday, March 11, 2007
By TODD PORTER

CANTON

There was still an hour left before Saturday night's Division I district championship game. The GlenOak team bus made its way down Market Avenue. The Golden Eagles saw the droves and droves and droves of fans walking toward Memorial Civic Center.

They saw the signs and the scalpers. They saw electricity in downtown Canton.

And they plugged into it.

Saturday night was rare. Two 7-footers from the same county who shop in some of the same stores went head to head for 32 minutes. It was top-seeded GlenOak against Perry, the hottest team in this district tournament.
