COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State and Penn State open the Big Ten Conference season with four games in Columbus this weekend. Three of the games ? the first three games of the series ? will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The Big Ten Network will also be in Columbus next week and will air two of the games against Minnesota. That will conclude BTN televised games from Columbus in the regular season, although the doubleheader at Northwestern will be on the network.

Ohio State is coming off a 9-1 win over Pittsburgh Wednesday that improved its record to 10-6. Andrew Armstrong, a southpaw from Bridgewater, Va., improved to 2-1 on the season by pitching 5.0 innings, scattering five hits and allowing no earned runs. He struck out five and walked just two. He retired 10 consecutive batters at one point. Penn State is coming off a three-game set against Lehigh last weekend and a loss to Canisius Monday. Penn State enters the series with a 5-12 record.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State scored 15 runs off 18 hits ? 16 of them singles ? and defeated Penn State, 15-0, in the Big Ten Conference opener for both schools. Ohio State improves to 11-6 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten with its third consecutive win. Penn State drops to 5-13 and 0-1.

The 15-run margin was the largest margin of victory since Ohio State defeated Penn State by 27 runs, 29-2, in 2005 at State College.

Ohio State starting pitcher Jake Hale allowed two hits and two walks and struck out three in six innings to improve to 2-0.



By the time Tyler Engle started digging in as the ninth man in the batting order, Ohio State had scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning.
That didn't loosen the walnut-sized knot he had in the pit of his stomach.
"I felt like there was a lot of pressure on me to keep it up," said Engle, a true freshman from Fort Frye High School in Beverly, Ohio. "Coach (Bob) Todd has been on me for taking fastballs, and the first fastball I saw I tried to get on it and get a good a swing on it."
And how did Engle feel running to first base with a single?
"I kind of lost consciousness for a minute," he said.
Engle had three more hits and drove in four runs as the Buckeyes routed Penn State 15-0 in their Big Ten opener last night in Bill Davis Stadium.

Dreaded doubleheader doubly disappointing

One positive came out of Ohio State's doubleheader loss to Penn State yesterday, and it had nothing to do with players being able to get out of the biting wind and cold after four-plus hours.
This is the final year that Big Ten baseball teams will play four-game series that include the dreaded seven-inning game on Saturdays that test even the best of pitching staffs and longest of attention spans.
So the Buckeyes can at least say "one doubleheader down and only seven more to go" after losing 3-1 and 5-2 to the Nittany Lions in Bill Davis Stadium.
Most of the crowd of 1,324 ran for the exits after the opener. Historically, crowds have thinned out after the first game no matter what the weather is, or the quality of play.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State and Penn State took part in a classic pitchers duel Sunday with the edge going to Ohio State?s J.B. Shuck, who pitched the team to a needed 2-0 win over Penn State at Bill Davis Stadium. The win evened Ohio State?s record in the Big Ten at 2-2 and improved its overall mark to 12-8. Penn State is also 2-2 in the Big Ten and is 7-14 overall.
Shuck (4-1), an intense and terrific athlete who was beaned high in the shoulder in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader, chose to dominate the Nittany Lions rather than retaliate. The junior from Galion, Ohio struck out a career-high 13 batters while scattering four hits and not allowing a run in a season-high 8.0 innings pitched.

Funny thing about baseball. One day you totally destroy at team by 15 runs and the next day get beat by them twice. I got to see a good chunk of Friday night's blowout on BTN's rebroadcast and we looked impressive. But again, baseball is a day-to-day thing...

Watching that series on DirectTV out here in Arizona, looked like two totally different teams. Friday night we looked great in every aspet. Saturday they looked completely hopeless. We seem to only have a couple guys right now that show up on a daily basis. Todd needs to get shit together or get someone else in here that know how to motivate these kids.
