a few of the top RBs from Ohio who we passed on are having productive years at other big ten schools

'05 Tyrell Sutton (not sure why we didn't go after Tyrell)
'05 Javon Ringer (backed off due to knee and to lesser extent grades)

'04 Gary Russell (never seriously recruited due to grades?)

our choices above these 3 were....

'05 Mo Wells - so far it looks like we got the short end of the stick here, just based on the productivity of Sutton/Ringer

'04 Antonio Pittman- looks like a good choice
'04 Erik Haw- hopefully he gets a shot...but looks like he was overated

Sutton- If you want to blame Tressel for not offering, you might want to ask the rest of the big 10, and every other big time team, why they did the same....his best offer was from N'Western. He's gonna be a good back for them, but Tress isn't the only one who passed.

Ringer- He was passed over for grades, period.

Russel- Grades.

Mo Wells- It's hard to guage how good he can be when he's being mis-used. He's not a north/south runner, which is what Tress is trying to make him. We'll see what he can do when they give a chance to use his speed on outside runs.

Pittman- Agreed. He's been great.

Haw- So, he's overrated based on what? 3 carries? He's in Tressel's doghouse right now, but he's probably the most physically talented back on the roster. If he's allowed to actually get on the field, he should be fine.

dude, it is WAY too early to make any judgements like that on Pittman, Haw, or Wells.

If you were going to judge Eddie George after his freshamn year, you probably wouldn't have given him much of a chance to be worthwhile either.

Uh, it's tough to get yardage when you only come in late in the game where the defense knows you're going to run and the staff calls a run right into the line.

As for Haw, the jury is still out because he has had next to no ops (granted the like of ops was due to his off-field behavior).

Sutton was too similar to Mo Wells, which is why we didn't recruit him. I think BN27 is right on too- Mo would be tearing it up at either MSU or NW this year. If only Ringer had the grades to make it past OSU's in-house clearinghouse...

What do you guys think about us passing on this years in-state guys (Anthony Elzy- North Carolina, Jacob Ramsey- Cincinnati, DeLone Carter- Syracuse)? Anyone think we're missing out on a Ringer/Sutton this year? ::computerbuck face::

1. Sutton's only two offers were from Illinois and NU, so the question is not why didn't OSU go after him, but why didn't anyone go after him. Every school has a running back who can do something and kids like Sutton, Backes, etc will put up numbers that will cause some people to ask why didn't we .... To suggest he would be doing anything other than riding the pine watching Pittman lacks support.

2. Russel was grades just as Wheelwright was grades. It is happening more and more, but there is really nothing more to discuss.

3. The only name on the list that merits any discussion at all is Ringer - who also had offers from Tennessee and Florida. There is no record that he got an offer from OSU. For my money that ends the discussion. I don't know what the reason was that we did not offer. I would be surprised to learn that the coaches had never heard of him. I would be surprised that they had never seen film. I would be surprised that the decision not to offer or not to pursue aggressively was anything other than a well thought out decision by a coaching staff that does quite well in evaluating talent.

4. Wells, for whom it would be premature to issue any sort of assessment, also had an offer from USC and was described by Conley as the best RB prosect he had ever seen.

5. Haw has had even less chance to be evaluated than Wells. But in any case he was selected in the class before Ringer, a class where we were backed doored by Dairus Walker.

6. Of all the backs listed above I take Pittman based on performance to date (Ringer has had 4 carries against quality opponents).

The question that threads like this ultimately are asking is why OSU doesn't have 200 scholarships and offer everybody.

BTW - are we OK with Chirs Wells?

I always think it is interesting to follow these things down the road, and the set-up of our database allows for that. It will be fun.

Remember, we had Wells early (whom the staff liked better than Sutton, obviously), and we were pursuing Gwaltney. None of those guys is a Gwaltney, but Chris Wells IS. So, overall, though you'd love to have all of the productive Ohio guys, recruiting at RB has been A-OK the last three years, 2006 included.

If you go back and read the Ringer thread, you will recall that he was highly desired by Buckeye fans and even by the coaches, but he was only going to get to Columbus via Gray-shirt, which didn't suit him. Can't blame him for his choice to go to E. Lansing; he should get 1000 yards this year. Too bad we don't have him, but not much we could or can do about it.
