Fired up! Ready to go!
A nest of great horned owls, with two or three babies, is in the cemetery behind our house. The mom and dad were staring right at me as I looked at them through my binoculars. They were amazing! I've been trying to get some photos, but they are too high up the tree. Today I talked with a photographer that was hanging out by the tree, and he directed me to these photos online:

They are much larger than I expected them to be! The babies are funny looking, but the adults are beautiful!

owls are cool. i remember about 10 years ago, i was watching my parents house while they were on Safari. so i was sitting out back under a tree one night and i decided to see if i could call in a screech owl. their call sounds like when you whistle with some spit in the back of your mouth. anyway, so i was sitting there whistling, and i was getting some call backs, and eventually i got the owl sitting in lowest branch of the tree i was sitting under. the little guy must have only been about 8 or 10 feet away from me. so i'm sitting there whistling at this owl, and it's looking at me, and whistling back, when all the sudden there was a "whoosh" which i felt more than heard, and the little owl was GONE! WTF!?! i froze for a bit because literally one second that owl was there, and the next second it was gone. then i heard a Great Horned Owl's call from the distance and remembered that Great Horned Owls EAT Screech Owls. when i was calling in the Screech, i had inadvertantly called in something that likes to eat it. i was so freaked that i had to go in the house...

screech owls are only about 8 inches tall and weigh just under a half pound.
great horned owls are about 18-24 inches tall and weigh between 2 and 4 pounds.

Growing up we had a very large owl nest in the neighbors tall pine tree. It was very cool, but for some reason the cats in the neighborhood were all dying. Everyone assumed it was from the owl who was then "removed" by the guy who's tree it was in.

He was a bastard - he killed the wise old owl for eating pussy.

Our house abuts a large nature reserve and we have an owl who sits on the roof above our bedroom every now and then. He doesn't seem to be afraid of people and just sits there looking for mice to emerge in the field next door, which is just fine for me. They truly are regal creatures and they fly without a sound. Very impressive pictures, Sushi, hope they stay around a while and that you get to see the first flights.:)
