Sophomore Florida sprinter Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) turned in the second-fastest time in the country this season in the men's 60-meter dash, recording an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark, to highlight a number of strong performances by the Gators at a pair of meets on Friday - the Virginia Tech Elite Meet and the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

Poor Jeff was hurt (foot injury) since the Tennessee game last September. Nice to see him recover from the injury in time for indoor track.

Congrats to Jeff Demps and his teammates for repeating as NCAA Men's Indoor Track Champions

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- No. 1 Florida became just the fourth different men’s program in NCAA history
to claim back-to-back NCAA Indoor Championships, scoring 52 total team points to capture the 2011 national
crown on Saturday evening at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University.

The Gators join Arkansas, Kansas, and UTEP as the only men’s programs in NCAA history to win NCAA Indoor
Championships in consecutive years. Florida is the first team to accomplish the feat since Arkansas did so in
2005 and 2006. The Gators totaled 52 points to defeat second-place Texas A&M by 12 points. The Aggies
scored 40 points, while BYU was third with 34 points. Fourth-place LSU (31) and fifth-place Florida State (30)
rounded out the men’s top-five. Oregon won the women’s title with 67 total team points, while Texas was
second with 38 and LSU was third with 37.

It marked the 25th national title in UF school history.

Congrats to the Gators! Back-to-back titles is quite an accomplishment. They've built quite a program down there.

Former Ohio high school athletes that I recognize from the final results...
Jessica Beard (Texas A&M, Euclid HS) - 1st in the 400m (50.79) and the anchor leg of the winning 4x400m relay (3:29.72)

Gray Horn (Florida, Waynesfield-Goshen HS) - 4th in the Heptathlon (5890 points, 7 points from 3rd and 12 points from 2nd)

Trayvon Bromell becomes first prep runner to eclipse 10 seconds in the 100-meter dash

Albeit with a heavy tailwind at his back, St. Petersburg (Fla.) Gibbs High senior Trayvon Bromell became the first prep runner to eclipse 10 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

The Baylor-bound sprinter won the event at the Great Southwest Classic with a time of 9.99 seconds on the University of New Mexico track. While remarkably impressive, his effort does not qualify as the national record due to a tailwind of 4.0 meters per second.

That honor still belongs to former Groveland (Fla.) South Lake High star Jeff Demps, whose time of 10.01 seconds at the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials still ranks as the U.S. No. 1 prep time in history. Demps, who ran the first leg of the silver medal-winning 4x100-meter relay squad at the 2012 London Olympics this past summer, was traded from the New England Patriots to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2013 NFL Draft.

Still, Bromell's 100-meter dash time at Great Southwest is the fastest time among high school track and field athletes ever recorded using the fully automatic timing system.

.../snip/...

By means of comparison, as an 18-year-old in 2001, Great Britain's Mark Lewis-Francis covered 100 meters in 9.97 seconds at the World Athletics Championships, but a failed wind instrument reading meant the time could not be confirmed. In late April, Japanese sprint sensation Yoshihide Kiryu, 17, clocked a qualifying time of 10.01 seconds.
