Head coach Bob Todd welcomes 13 newcomers to the 05-06 roster.
Sept. 26, 2005
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State head baseball coach Bob Todd welcomed 13 freshmen, including nine players from the state of Ohio, when his team reported for camp Sept. 12 at Bill Davis Stadium. The group began classes last week.
"I think we had an outstanding recruiting class," Todd, who is entering his 19th season at Ohio State, said. "We have some great athletes and I think we are going to have some of these players contribute this year as freshmen. There are a lot of high school multi-sport athletes in this group."
In all, eight of the 13 newcomers played another sport in addition to baseball, keeping an Ohio State tradition alive of recruiting top overall athletes. Since the Big Ten began recognizing a freshman of the year in 1988, eight Buckeyes have been honored, including five in the last seven years.
"Once a multi-sport athlete gets to college and can focus on baseball, it is a lot easier to meet his potential," Todd said.
In addition to the nine freshmen from Ohio, the Buckeyes added one player each from Michigan, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Virginia. In the offseason, Todd signed three right-handed pitchers, three left-handed pitchers, two catchers, three infielders and two outfielders and a total of six members of the class attained all-state honors in baseball.
The group consists of Taylor Barnes (RHP, Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier), Josh Barrera (LHP, Somerset, Ohio/Sheridan), Eric Best (LHP/IF, Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), Matt Curran (IF, Wormleysburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), Jake Hale (RHP, Albany, Ohio/Alexander), Brad Hays (LHP, Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic), Zach Hurley (OF, Springboro, Ohio/Springboro), Justin Miller (C, Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby), Seth Sanders (IF, Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), J.B. Shuck (OF, Galion, Ohio/Galion), Nick Steponovich (C, Columbia, Mo./Hickman), Ben Toussant (IF, Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Jake Weber (RHP, Hilliard, Ohio/Central Crossing).
