First congratulations to Coach Matta on his 300th win.

Tomorrow, November 17th at Value City Arena in Columbus @ 7:00 pm ET the Buckeyes meet up with Grambling State University of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in a Basketball Hall of Fame game..

The Buckeyes are currently 1-0 – with a win also in the opening exhibition against Walsh.

In Coach Matta’s 300th victory the Buckeyes dominated Mount Saint Mary in a 76-54 win. Five players would score double figures: Jae’sean Tate (21) Marc Loving (15) JaQuan Lyle (15) Daniel Giddens (11) and Kieta Bates-Diop (10). Loving and Bates-Diop would also snatch double figures in rebounds: Loving (11) Bates-Diop (10) for a double-double for both. The game was never in doubt and the Buckeyes rolled as four true freshmen saw action.

Now, on to tomorrow’s game. Grambling State’s record currently stands at 1-1.

They lost their opener to East Carolina University in a thriller 61-53. In that loss NYC native Forward Michael Bethea, Jr. would sink 18 points while 5’10” Guard Nigel Ribeiro would drop another 10. Even in their loss promise was shown not only in the NYC native’s scoring ability, but his ball handling. Junior Center 6’11” Ugur Hortum impressed Head Coach Shawn Walker enough to say: “I like this kid.”

In their first victory of the season against Mid-Atlantic Christian they simply pummeled the inferior team 85-26. In this game every single player that was on the court scored. Every player on the team as well would play at least 10 minutes. A rotation of players was enacted so that Coach Walker could register how he would generate his plan against a much more dominant team in the Buckeyes come Tuesday the 17th in Columbus.

THE BUCKEYES:

Four True Freshmen saw action in Sunday’s victory: Austin Grandstaff, Daniel Giddens, JaQuan Lyle, and A.J. Harris. The only Senior on the Buckeyes squad is 6’11” Forward Jake Lorbach who rarely sees action and most likely will be limited this year as well.

In the two games played so far (1 exhibition) three players are standing out. In the exhibition against Walsh Forward Jae’sean Tate scored 19 points with 9 rebounds. In the win against Mount Saint Mary he was good for 21 points and 9 rebounds. Forward Marc Loving against Walsh hit 24 points and 10 rebounds. The win yesterday in Coach Matta’s 300th he’d have 15 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Kieta Bates-Diop vs. Walsh had 26 points with 8 rebounds. And in the opener win he’d drop 10 points with 10 rebounds.

A player I feel that will eventually shine is VA Tech transfer Sophomore 7’0” Trevor Thompson who against Walsh in 18 minutes of play gave the Buckeyes 6 points and 10 rebounds. Against Mount Saint Mary in 11 minutes he’d deliver 3 points with 4 rebounds.

The Buckeyes are in a rebuilding year – if there is such a thing in College Basketball today. Coach Matta has assembled a talented team that will indeed surprise many comers.

THE TIGERS:

Grambling State’s experience is similar to the Buckeyes. They have 2 Seniors on the team, one redshirted. The Lone true senior 6’6” Forward Mark Gray in 19 minutes in their season opening loss to East Carolina had 2 points and 2 rebounds. In the victory against Mid-Atlantic Christian he would be on the court for 22 minutes scoring 10 points with 3 rebounds and adding 2 assists. The redshirted senior 5’11” Guard Arnold Richmond against East Carolina in 15 minutes of action would be 0-0 in both scoring and rebounds. In their lopsided victory against Mid-Atlantic Christian in 19 minutes he would have 5 points with 2 rebounds.

There are 9 Juniors on this squad which account for their experience. Two of those Juniors are NYC natives: both Guards – 6’6” Michael Bethea, Jr. and 6’4” Ervin Mitchell. These two are the stars of the Tigers. Another NYer – Long Islander – Center 6’9” Kyle Williams shows talent as well.

FINAL SUMMATION:

The Tigers do have talent both Bethea and Mitchell can score when left unattended. Center Hortum is a continued project but when he is focused he can play the role of big-man with efficiency. The other Center Kyle Williams who also plays at Forward, though small at 6’9” is focused and will attempt to display his guts in the low post.

Coach Walker has had the good fortune of having the same group from last year – or maybe not. Last year they posted a 2-27 record and were 0-18 in Conference play. The fortunate discussion is that he has an opportunity to better these kids as they continue to have his lessons engrained within them – no new students – no new coaching methods.

The Buckeyes are too strong here for the Grambling State Tigers. We know the names on the Buckeyes Squad and the damage they are capable of inflicting – at least from the past two games – and in a game such as this. I would like to see more time for Trevor Thompson, allowing him to develop his game.

Outside of that – frankly – this should be a complete dominating performance for the Buckeyes in Columbus on Tuesday. This is the type of game that players with less playing time can and will be able to show Coach Matta what they can do. Even look for Senior Jake Lorbach to get in and suddenly become a crowd favorite.

The Buckeyes by no less than 15.
