(Thad is eager for the season to begin. So are we!)

Thad, above, is all smiles and so are we. Ohio State opened their 2015-2016 season Sunday by hosting Mount St. Mary’s (MD). The “new look” (more on that later) Buckeyes won 76-54, and had the game pretty much in hand through-out the contest. Ohio State surged out to a 42-21 halftime lead, then essentially cruised in the 2nd half (34-33) to provide the winning margin. The loss drops MSM to 0-2, with their other loss being to Big Ten’s Maryland, 56-80.

At the very beginning of Thad’s 12th season as Ohio State head coach, this win was his 300th. Last March, Thad won his 298th game, surpassing OSU coaching legend Fred Taylor, to become OSU’s winningest coach. Congratulations to Thad, his assistant coaches, and of course, to his players.

Game Points

  • The Buckeyes placed five players in double digit scoring: Jae’sean Tate (21 pts), Marc Loving (15), JaQuan Lyle (12), Daniel Giddens (11) and Kieta Bates-Diop (10). In addition, Loving (11 reb) and Bates-Diop (10) recorded double-doubles.
  • Ohio State shot 50% (28-56)from the field, 40% (6-15) from 3-pt range and an impressive 82% (14-17) from the FT line.
  • Mount St.Mary’s was held to 33% (21-63) from the field, 28% (7-25) from 3-pt range and 71% (5-7) from the FT line.
  • Ohio State dominated the boards, out-rebounding MSM 50-22. The Buckeyes grabbed 37 defensive rebounds. That opportunity is there when your opponent is shooting only 33%.

In Summary

You can get the flow of the game here, but basically, the Buckeyes were in control the entire game. At the under-16 time-out, OSU led 12-4. At the under-12 it was 16-9. At the 6:00 mark, OSU stretch the lead to 17 points, 30-13, and cruised into the half holding a 42-21 lead. The 2nd half involved some basket trading, with OSU’s lead fluctuating between 16-22 points. There was however one “teaching point” for Thad near the end of the game. At the 1:27 mark, Austin Grandstaff buried a long, and I mean long range 3-point FG. ON MSM’s ensuing possession, Grandstaff’s man, unguarded, buried a 3-pointer from the left corner. I’m guessing that young Austin will be reminded of the finer points of defense. It’s all a learning experience.

In the opening paragraph, I mentioned the “new look” Buckeyes. By that, the returning players, notably Marc Loving, were more assertive and active and the newer players played with the confidence and poise of upperclassmen. The Three Wizened Men (Loving, Tate, Bates-Diop) combined for 46 points, 30 rebounds and 3 blocks. If Thad wants his returning players to set an example, this is the way to do it.

Freshman guard JaQuan Lyle (12 pts, 6 rbs, 3 asst) and freshman center Daniel Giddens (11 pts, 6 rbs, 1 blk) had impressive debuts for Ohio State. Granted, JaQuan had 5 turnovers, but as the primary ball handler in his first Division 1 game, I think we can cut the lad some slack.

Two other items were of interest to me. First, the Buckeyes shot an impressive 82% from the free throw line. Granted, the sample size (1 game) is pretty limited, but it is significantly better than last season’s 68% free throw accuracy. The other, perhaps more significant item was Ohio State’s offensive rebounding efficiency. They grabbed 13 offense rebounds, off 28 missed field goals; a “retrieval” rate of 46%. Last year, they “retrieved” 38% of their misses. The more offensive ‘re-sets’ at your offensive end of the court, the better off you’ll likely be. If nothing else, this improved offensive rebounding indicated, to me, a higher energy level and aggressiveness by the Buckeyes. Hopefully, this is something they continue for the next 30-some games this season.

The Buckeyes next take the court on Tuesday the 17th in Columbus versus Grambling University. This is part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET and it will be televised via BTN.
