Firm grows quickly, quietly

John Neace will be the first to say that selling insurance isn't very sexy.

But taking an insurance agency from startup to the 28th-largest brokerage in the U.S. and growing sales to $82 million? That's kinda sexy.

That's what Neace and his partner, Joe Lukens, have quietly done since starting Neace Lukens in 1991. Begun with just the two of them, the business has grown to employ nearly 550 in 12 markets and has its name in lights at the top of a downtown building. Not bad for a couple of local guys who, as Neace says, follow the decidedly unsexy maxim, "We're a solid Midwestern company with Midwestern values."
Lukens, a Moeller High football player, class of '79, Ohio State offensive lineman 1979 to 1983, and NFL draftee, knew someone he played football with in Columbus and talked him into opening an office there. That's how it went for a while.
