The week for the Buckeyes Women’s Volleyball Team started promising as Audra Appold earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on Monday (Nov. 23). She did so after averaging 5.57 kills per set and attacking .378 (39-11-74) in a split; (W-Iowa – 3-1) & (L-Wisc. – 3-0). Appold has been recognized with this award for the third time thus far in this long season. She, in fact, becomes the first Buckeye to ever be recognized as so three times:

Appold Weekly Awards:

ESPN Women’s National Player of the week – Oct., 14th
Big Ten Player of the Week – Oct. 5th
Big Ten Freshmen of the week – Oct. 5th, Oct 12th, & Nov. 23rd

Back to Reality

The Ohio State University’s Lady Buckeyes battled hard as they pushed the 4th ranked team in the nation to five sets before finally succumbing in the final frame 15-9. The Buckeyes now fall to 22-9 overall and 11-8 in Big Ten action. The Golden Gophers climb to 25-4 overall and 17-2 in the Big Ten. Minnesota, with this victory, clinches at least a share of the 2015 Big Ten championship.

The Buckeyes began enthusiastically by clutching the first two sets 27-5 & 31-29. But the Golden Gophers pulled together and mustered enough strength to outlast the Buckeyes in the final three sets: 17-15, 25-15, 15-9.

Elizabeth Campbell and Katie Mitchell would both score double-double, posting 18 kills and 15 digs for Campbell and 11 kills and 14 digs for Mitchell. Audra Appold matched Campbell in the number of kills – 18 while Taylor Sandbothe would post 13 kills – making it four Buckeyes to arrive in the double digit kill category. Taylor Hughes and Valeria León combined for 27 digs.

In the 5th and final set the Buckeyes slammed the throttle into full-steam-ahead as the entire 14-player roster saw action in their bid to upend the powerful Golden Gophers. But the ladies from Minnesota would have none of it. They would push back and finalized the set 15-9.

The final score would be 3-2 in favor of the 4th ranked Golden Gophers.

The 2015 season comes to a close this Saturday the 28th as they host the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers at 7 pm for Senior Night. If by chance you will be at the game stick around after the action is completed for the Senior Class recognition ceremony.

The action can be seen on cable – Buckeye Vision if you cannot make it there in person.

See you there.
