The Ohio State University Women’s Volleyball team dropped another one to the Nation’s new #1 – Penn State. The Nittany Lions jumped from 3 to 1 over the weekend in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
Friday October 30th in University Park the Buckeyes suffered a four-set loss to the Nittany Lions. The Lady Buckeyes took the match into a fourth frame after winning the third 25-19. But Penn State finished it, 25-14. (25-15, 25-16, 19-25 & 25-14).
Audra Appold, Elizabeth Campbell, and Taylor Sandbothe would each have double kills: led by Audra with 15. Campbell and Sandbothe would combine for another 22.
Taylor Sandbothe would attack with a .474 % while dropping 4 blocks. Luisa Schirmer would lead with 11 digs and 2 aces for the defensive back-court.
Penn State though would conquer the 1st 25-15.
The second set didn’t fare any better for the Buckeyes. Penn State would take it as well 25-16.
The third began an offensive clinic orchestrated by the Buckeyes. Appold and Sandbothe each with 5 kills on just 17 attempts – hitting on one error. The defensive efforts paid well – helping the Buckeyes to lead for good – forcing a Penn State time-out. The Nittany Lions would submerge to a .147 hitting percentage on the sheer strength of the Buckeyes blocks and combined 13 digs. The Buckeyes would take this one 25-19.
The 4th would display determination on both parts. OSU needing to grab the 4th got out-shined by Penn State though. The Nittany Lions would swing at .500 and had a powerful 15 kills. They would end the match with a 25-14 total.
Does this hurt the Buckeyes? It doesn’t help. They now have 4 losses in the BIG and 5 overall. Placement in BIG Championship has now lessened in position. But these Lady’s are Buckeye tough. They do not need to hear that they lost to Penn State – again. It is way too much ingrained in their reality. Athletes understand the situation and what needs to be done. It is a soldiers’ mentality most simply do not comprehend.
They would prefer to have won this one. It would have been a sweet victory. But it did not happen. So they will march on as they head east first through Maryland on Nov. 6th before heading to Piscataway where they will meet up with the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers the following night on Nov.7th.
All that can be done now is the focus on reality – which is the matches ahead.
The Buckeyes will be fine. Give them thumbs up on both Facebook & Twitter. We are Buckeye Nation and we will be watching this coming weekend & screaming at the television. Fans love their teams. And we love The Ohio State University’s Women Volleyball Buckeyes.
See you there. GO BUCKEYES.
