This past weekend The Ohio State University Women’s Rugby Team did not have a game.

Though they hardly sat idle.

Saturday October 4 wasn’t the wondrous (weather-wise) day we all had hoped. As the East Coast was being pounded with a Nor’easter the day before and sighing with relief as Hurricane Joaquin decided to stay at sea – Columbus was seemingly receiving some remnants of that ugliness.

This would have kept most indoors. But the women of the OSU Rugby team started their Sunday bright and early (6:30 a.m.) as they participated in the beauty of Community awareness with a nice reach-out to the Pump and Run (http://www.liftinghopes.com) which is a wonderful organization committed to the cause of Childhood cancers and witnessing its eradication.

Our Lady Buckeyes set up the weights for the bench press and marked the entire track for the 5K run. The competition promised to be a fantastic motivator and ultimately delivered precisely that.

The day was far from over.

The schedule for the Rugby Camp had to be changed due to the unpredictability of the weather. Instead of 2 sessions everything was combined into 1 long session. (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

There was a nice mix of High School players (7 total) as well as 7 new players for the Buckeyes that participated. During this session several elements of the game was covered for the new Rugby enthusiasts (short/long passing, body positioning at contact – specifically in the rucks, & running lines – as well as “pod-system” work).

In conclusion of this camp the new “inductees” were enthusiastic of their new knowledge of this wonderful game called Rugby – looking forward to their futures in it.

This wondrous sale is because of our Lady Buckeyes.

Let’s keep it real!

Following the camp both the Women’s Rugby team and the participants of the camp had a positive afterwards meeting before heading to the Union for lunch. A tour of the campus, dorms, libraries, etc., concluded this very positive Sunday.

There are many more camps to come we have been told. Our Lady Buckeyes were thrilled by their role and the High School girls – we are told – are looking forward to when they will be enrolled here at The Ohio State University, thus able to join the Women’s Rugby Club.

All in all, it was a totally successful day. The plans come winter is to make the camp bigger and better with a focus on Player Development, while teaching the members of the camp(s) the learning tool of Video Analysis, and providing Nutritional and Fitness tips.

The whole scenario of Sunday details the overflowing yearning that this team has in their generosities towards noble causes (particularly http://www.liftinghopes.com ) and their desire to teach and bring aboard fervent accomplices into the Rugby fold. It is commendable of these Ladies and the Coaching staff and should be acknowledged.

Now – in addressing their praiseworthy deeds – let us show true appreciation by showing up @ Fred Beekman Park on Sunday October 11th at 11:00 a.m. to root our new heroes on as they take on Penn State.

Did I say “take on”?

Pardon me!

I meant to say – “Beat!”
