The basketball Buckeyes added two new members to the family on Wednesday. Is there room for another?
Funderburk and Potter ink with OSU
The big news on Wednesday was Ohio State officially welcoming the two 2016 prospects in their hoops recruiting class to the program. '16 C Derek Funderburk, formerly of St. Edward (OH), who spent his senior year in Virginia at Hargrave Military Academy, is coming back home to be a student-athlete for the university as Funderburk signed his letter of intent with the Buckeyes.
Joining Funderburk is '16 C Micah Potter, who at one point during the recruiting process was rumored as a possible reclassification candidate to the 2017 class. However, that was not the case as Potter also inked with Thad Matta and Ohio State yesterday. Potter, a 6'10, 245-pounder, used to be at Mentor (OH) before departing to Montverde Academy in the sunshine state.
The additions for the Buckeyes should give them some additional help in the frontcourt in coming seasons. Potter comes in graded out as a three-star prospect in the class, while Funderburk will come in fresh off of a four-star high school ranking and was a Top 100 player.
Spot for Simmons?
As we all know, Ohio State has been and still is actively pursuing '16 G Kobi Simmons from St. Francis (GA). The problem is, with the two bigs --Funderburk and Potter -- signing their national letters of intent on Wednesday, the Buckeyes technically do not have room for the 6'5, 170-pounder.
The most expected scenario for a possible Simmons-to-Ohio State marriage involved Potter reclassifying, like mentioned above, to the 2017 class like he was rumored to be not long ago. Potter put that to rest yesterday when he signed on with the Scarlet and Gray and now that leaves a big question mark on the recruitment of Simmons.
Will the Buckeyes still pursue him? I would bet so. But if he wanted in, Head Coach Thad Matta would have to figure out some way to make it work. If Simmons, with his elite talent, wanted to come to Columbus when it's all said and done, I have a hard time believing Ohio State would just turn him away. This will be an interesting recruitment to follow until the Alpharetta native signs on some team's dotted line. It's worth mentioning that while Simmons pushed back his decision date, at this time, the Buckeyes are the favorite on the 247Sports Crystal Ball to land him.
