Some interesting hypotheticals have cropped up involving a former Ohio State target and one of the top in-state players in the Buckeye State for 2017.

Coughlin an option again?

In early January, Ohio State was a realistic possibility as the collegiate destination for '16 LB Carter Coughlin of Eden Prairie (MN). That was just about the time when the four-star prospect released a top three that included the Buckeyes, the Oregon Ducks, and Minnesota. Of course two months later, Coughlin ultimately made his decision to stay in-state and commit to the Golden Gophers and Jerry Kill.

However, unfortunate news came about Wednesday morning when Kill announced his retirement due to health problems. Coughlin did reassure via Twitter that he will still be Minnesota-bound when it's all set and done, but we'll see if that will keep head coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes staff from trying to get back in the picture with the 6'4, 212-pounder.

Coughlin would certainly be a great addition to the Ohio State class, if he was to rethink things. It's also no secret that the Buckeyes are still actively searching for another linebacker to join Tuf Borland from Bolingbrook (IL). Coughlin currently grades out as the 10th best outside linebacker in the 2016 class and is comfortably the best player in the state of Minnesota. With that being said, I fully expect Coughlin to stick to his word, honor his commitment, and be a Golden Gopher for the next 3-4 years of his life.

Spartans offer Riep, Bucks next?

Coming into Wednesday, '17 SAF Amir Riep already had a grasp on six offers -- Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Miami (OH), and Toledo -- and surely more weren't too far ahead of him. It was Mark Dantonio and the Spartans who joined the Colerain (OH) prospect's offer sheet yesterday and made it number seven.

Could a Buckeye offer be up next? One step in the right direction already took place after that MSU offer came, as Ohio State's Mark Pantoni gave the 6'0, 180-pounder a follow on Twitter. Surely the two parties will be in contact and I would bet that the Cincinnati native has a Buckeye offer sooner rather than later. If the offer from the Scarlet and Gray comes, Kerry Coombs will be on call to help put OSU in a good position. Coombs was the head coach at Colerain High School for 16 years and even spent five years on the Bearcats' coaching staff prior to his arrival in Columbus. When it comes to Cincinnati -- specifically high school football -- not many know as much as Kerry Coombs.
