The veteran quarterback is prepared for his final season with the Buckeyes.
“Is it going to be perfect all the time? No. Being the quarterback, you get a lot of the blame, which I’m OK with. I accept it. But also, understand that bad things are going to happen, and I feel like I’m the best person for the job that we have at Ohio State.”
- J.T. Barrett via Austin Ward, ESPN
Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett has had one of the most prolific careers in Columbus and yet, heading into his senior season, there have been questions about whether some of the younger quarterbacks behind him should have been given the reins. But Barrett has had the noise before and is more than aware of what people are saying about him. One of the best statistical quarterbacks in Ohio State history, the veteran signal-caller has one final chance to prove some of his doubters wrong. After a fantastic freshman season that ended with an injury, Barrett has been up and down after splitting time with Cardale Jones in 2015 and then his completion percentage taking a hit after last season.
But with more experience all around him, 2017 looks to be better for Barrett. And under Kevin Wilson’s new offense, it wouldn’t be a surprise for him to return to form. He’s currently being set up to succeed this season and with some interesting talent at wide receiver, it could be a good shot to get back on track. Regardless, Barrett has been a winner first and foremost at Ohio State, compiling 26 wins in his three seasons. Now he’ll look to take it a step further and shoot for a national championship.
“I've got my hands on him personally. Josh Alabi is killing it right now, switching over to offensive line from defense. He's just going hard.”
- Billy Price via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com
With the bevy of talent on the defensive line at Ohio State each season, it can be tough for players to crack even a chance at making the rotation, much less starting. And when players such as Josh Alabi find themselves in that position, it’s not the worst idea into looking for other ways to contribute. And so Alabi has been getting work at right tackle this offseason with help from Billy Price, who also originally made the switch from defensive lineman to offensive lineman. Price has been a starter all four seasons with Ohio State and now has taken over center duties. With the depth at offensive tackle a concern, it makes sense for Alabi to make the move.
From what Price was saying, it sounds like the redshirt sophomore has been playing very well at his new position and it could make all the difference on a thin offensive line for the Buckeyes. While it may not be likely that he starts, it’s certainly a possibility down the line if he continues to perform well. He played both offensive and defensive line in high school so the position isn’t all that new to him, and it should help him catch up quickly with his teammates.
“[64-team bracket in college football] 1-seeds: Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida State”
- Chris Low, ESPN
The NCAA March Madness tournament is upon us once again, which means it’s time to fill out those brackets. Chris Low of ESPN took a nice spin on the college basketball tournament and applied it to college football and imagined what the tournament would like with 64 teams. Earning the one seeds, as you can see above, were Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Florida State. Low also predicted what the Sweet Sixteen would even look like. In the first round, Low has the Buckeyes pounding 16-seed Colorado State 45-7, following up with a second-round thumping of the eight-seed, Kansas State, to a tune of 31-13.
The Sweet Sixteen matchup for the Buckeyes would be against the fourth-seeded Miami Hurricanes with the winner playing either Penn State or USC with the two and three-seed respectively. The only other Big Ten team to make the Sweet Sixteen was Michigan as a five-seed who would have to face the top-seeded Oklahoma for a chance at the next round.
