The second-ranked Ohio State men's tennis team (23-2, 6-0 Big Ten) won its eighth consecutive match while extending its home win streak to 124 following a 5-2 victory over No. 28 Notre Dame (15-9) Wednesday at Stickney Tennis Center.
Buckeye
Devin McCarthy clinched the win for the five-time defending Big Ten champions for the second match in a row. McCarthy, a redshirt-sophomore, defeated Niall Fitzgerald 6-3, 6-3 for his 24th victory of the season. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native is now 19-2 in dual singles and 9-1 at the No. 5 position.
The win evened up the all-time series against the Irish, 26-26. It was also the fifth-consecutive victory for head coach
Ty Tucker, who improves to 8-4 overall vs. Notre Dame.
Ohio State improves to 55-4 as the No. 2 ranked team in the country and 14-0 at home on the season. The Scarlet and Gray also move to 16-2 vs. ITA nationally ranked opponents, including a 10-2 mark against Top 10 competition.

Blaz Rola teaming up and beating Notre Dame's Tyler Davis and Greg Andrews, 8-2. As a team the Buckeye duo moves to 7-1, all at the No. 3 spot. Overall for the season, Novak now has 23 doubles wins, while Rola has 22.
Chase Buchanan and senior co-captain
Shuhei Uzawa, the 66th-ranked tandem in the nation, also moved to 7-1 as a team, clinching the doubles point for Ohio State with an 8-6 decision over Casey Watt and Stephen Havens. Buchanan, the reigning Big Ten Athlete of the Week, moves to 22-7 overall in doubles while Uzawa improves to an impressive 16-3 mark.
Closing out doubles competition, Buckeyes
Matt Allare and
Peter Kobelt, the 12th-ranked team nationally, fell, 8-6, in a closely contested dual at No. 1 vs. Spencer Talmadge and Fitzgerald. The pair drops to 20-7 overall and 11-4 at the No. 1 position.
Rola, a Ptuj, Slovenia, native, rebounded after his loss vs. Michigan April 10, by quickly defeating Notre Dame's Watt, the 54th ranked player in the country 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1. Rola, the nation's fifth-ranked player, improves his overall mark to 29-5 and 16-3 in dual singles, including a 7-2 mark at No. 1.
Allare continued his singles success, putting Ohio State up 3-0 after a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set victory vs. Andrews at No. 4 to extend his win streak to 15 matches. Allare, a Mason, Ohio native, moves to 18-1 in dual competition and 17-3 overall. He is now 13-0 when playing at the No. 4 spot.
Freshman Ille Van Engelen fell to 14-6 on the season after suffering a 6-3, 6-2 loss to the Irish's Daniel Stahl at No. 3.
McCarthy's straight-set win at No. 5 made the score 4-1 in Ohio State's favor.
To wrap up singles action, Buchanan beat Havens 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 for the Buckeyes' fifth point. The New Albany, Ohio, native secured his 25th singles and 20th dual win, improving to a 9-1 mark at the No. 2 spot.
Novak lost a three-set match 6-3, 5-7, 10-7, to Blas Moros in the final singles match of the evening.
The Buckeyes will return to conference play when they travel to Madison, Wis., Friday for a 3 p.m. ET match at Wisconsin. Ohio State will also face No. 20 Minnesota at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. The Scarlet and Gray are 39-32 all-time vs. the Badgers and 25-38 against the Golden Gophers.
