Ball State men's tennis team, which won the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship Saturday after defeating Toledo 4-1, earned the school's seventh automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament under the direction of head men's tennis coach Bill Richards. The Cardinals will face the fourth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio, Friday, May 13th.
"Obviously we are thrilled to be in the tournament," said Richards. "It is an honor to represent the Mid-American Conference although the draw is pretty tough the reality is that we got our work cut out for us. Ohio State is the No. 4 team in the nation and they have won multiple Big Ten championships. They have won 79 straight Big Ten matches. Again, we have our work cut out for us so we will get through finals this week and go to work and head over there and see if we can represent ourselves in a first class fashion."
The Cardinals will take a 15-14 overall mark to Columbus while the Buckeyes enter the match with a 31-2 record. The Buckeyes will be making their 12th appearance at the NCAA championships, all under current head coach Ty Tucker.
The championships will begin with regional action on campus sites May 13 with the round of 16 beginning May 19 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. Ball State is scheduled to play Ohio State at 1 p.

The Buckeyes earned the overall No. 4-seed in the tournament and will welcome Notre Dame, Ball State and East Tennessee State to Columbus.
Ohio State, which advanced to the 2010 NCAA tournament quarterfinals, will play Ball State (15-14) in the first round at 1 p.m. Friday. The initial match of the day between the Irish and Buccaneers will begin at 10 a.m. The winners of the two opening-round contests will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday for a chance to move on to the Round of 16 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. The University of Stanford will serve as the event's hosts. . . .
The Ball State Cardinals
Ball State is 15-14 overall and are 0-3 vs. teams hailing from the Big Ten. The Cardinals earned their seventh automatic bid to the NCAA tournament under head coach Bill Richards after defeating Toledo, 4-1, in the Mid-American Conference Championship. Ball State has not won on a neutral court this year, going 0-4.
Buckeyes vs. Ball State
The Scarlet and Gray are 9-3 all-time vs. the Cardinals. The match Friday will be head coach Ty Tucker's first meeting vs. Ball State.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame comes to Columbus with a 17-12 overall record, including a 5-3 ledger against Big Ten teams. The Irish are 3-2 on neutral courts and 11-11 vs. nationally-ranked opponents. In its last match, Notre Dame fell to No. 24 Louisville, 4-2.
Buckeyes vs. Notre Dame
Ohio State is 26-26 vs. the Irish all-time, including a 5-2 win earlier in the season (April 13). Under 12th-year head coach Ty Tucker, the Buckeyes are 8-4 vs. Notre Dame.
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers
ETSU is 17-6 overall on the year. The Buccaneers went 9-1 during the regular season vs. Atlantic Sun competition and 5-0 at neutral sites. ETSU is 0-4 vs. ranked teams this season. By defeating Steson, 4-2, April 16, the Buccaneers earned the Atlantic Sun's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Buckeyes vs. ETSU
Ohio State has faced the Buccaneers four times and has come away with four wins. The last meeting occurred in the NCAA Tournament Second Round in 2008, with the Buckeyes winning 4-0. The win was head coach Ty Tucker's only time competing vs. ETSU.
There's something undeniably perpetual about the state of the Ohio State men's tennis team. Just don't bring it up to coach Ty Tucker.
As he prepares the Buckeyes to play host to the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend, Tucker doesn't want to hear about their 126-match home winning streak.
"I've never even said anything about it, and I get mad at everything about it because it seems to be in every lead of every article that's written on our team," Tucker said. "We never talk about it as a team. I don't know what the streak is, and I don't care too much about the streak, to be honest."
Yet it does speak to the consistency and depth of the program that Tucker, who played for the Buckeyes in the 1990s, has built in his 12 seasons.
"The streak does say that we take every team seriously," Tucker said. "When I played tennis, I liked to be known as a guy who never lost to anybody that I was better than.
"And that's the kind of tennis we try to teach, . . .
