The Ohio State University’s Men’s Rugby Team held off a hungry Wolverine team 35-31 in Ann Arbor this past Saturday – 11/7.

The match was a tethering of wills. The Buckeyes though would prevail.

The importance of this game would result in if the Buckeyes would be heading back to the Big Championship match. TTUN simply had too many scenarios involved that would put them in Rockford. But that reality did not diminish the Wolverines hopes. They played hard with intent to win.

JoJo Eramo would score three tries while Captain Santino Cua would deliver one try. JoJo would also be the team’s leader in points with 15.

Ohio State would get a penalty late. Discussions pursued to opt for a kick for points, rather than attempt a scrum and hopefully run out the clock. The kick was good but what this ended up doing was what the Buckeyes hadn’t intended. It literally gave TTUN enough time to work down to OSU’s line.

The Buckeyes would hold on. They held TTUN – crushing their hopes of an upset. This would end as dramatically as it had begun. A tough match thoroughly.

The game though was won in the trenches. Forwards Jack Bengel and Jake Berlin represented the in-your-face-smash rugby that the Buckeyes have displayed all season. These two guys stood tall and battled hard and certainly are deserving of recognition.

OSU now heads to Rockford, IL for a 2nd stab at winning the BTU Championship match. Last year they lost to Wisconsin whom they tied this year. This year – next weekend – they match up against Indiana Hoosiers.
IN had a tough match themselves – pitted against the defending BTU Champions – Wisconsin Badgers. They would prevail in a 20-13 win.

Later this week we will provide a preview of the Championship match looking at both the Buckeyes and the Hoosiers.
Coach Rooney and his staff certainly are energized. They are heading back to the BTU Championship. What is the primary focus this year is that they have the taste in their mouths – in their spirits that only returning participants possesses.

IN is undoubtedly a good team. They have great players. They too see an outcome that generates recognition of their superiority with a celebration in Bloomington.
The Buckeyes though see differently.
