The Ohio State men’s basketball season is right around the corner. The Buckeyes will take on Walsh in exhibition play on November 8th. To help get you ready for tip-off, The Buckeye Battle Cry will be bringing you Player Previews leading up to the beginning of the season. Today, we take a closer look at one of the program’s best sharpshooters.

There might not be a ton of expectations on the Ohio State Buckeyes this season, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be excited for another season of Ohio State Men’s basketball. Few expect much from this very inexperienced group of young players.

One player who could do big things this season though is redshirt sophomore Kam Williams.

Williams started off very strong in his freshman season getting lots of playing time at the beginning of the year.

Gone are the days of Shannon Scott, Sam Thompson, and Amir Williams running for Ohio State. Looking to mend the gap is Kam Williams, who will have a fair shake to start at shooting guard for the Scarlet and Gray during the 2015-16 season.

Kam Williams

Hometown: Baltimore, MD
High School: Mount St Joseph’s
Position: SG
Year: RS Sophomore
Height: 6-2
Weight: 175

Ohio State Awards/Accomplishments

  • Saw action in all 35 games off the bench, averaging 14.3 minutes per game
  • Averaged 5.4 points per contest while connecting on 34.6 percent (28-for-81) of his 3-point attempts and shooting 91.3 percent (21-for-23) from the free throw line
  • Scored Game High 23 points in win over High Point on December 10, 2014

One of the top prospects in the state of Maryland, Kam Williams has been shooting the ball well from beyond the 3 points line and is one of the best at the free Throw line at Ohio State.

Kam Williams could very well be Ohio State’s starting shooting guard to start the season. While his shooting range on the court has been compared to another former Buckeye Jon Diebler. Despite scholarship offers from mostly mid-major programs in terms of Baskeball, Matta saw something in Williams.

Many people expect Williams to be Ohio State’s main threat from the 3 point line this coming season.

High School Accomplishments

— Led Mount St. Joseph to back-to-back Baltimore Catholic League Tournament titles in 2012 and 2013.

— Williams averaged 21 points a game during his senior year and had over 2,000 career points

Strengths

Kam Williams has shooting tools that you cannot teach. His range is the parking lot, he can also get to the basket, and he’s a great free throw shooter

Something that Ohio State struggled with all last season.

You have to love the way this team is trending towards grittiness as well. Williams is “can get hot as a pistol” type player that can score in bunches every time he laces up his shoes.

Williams also has no fear in shooting the basketball. He could be 0-8 from the field or 3 point line and he will still fire away knowing the next one could go in. He can be called upon to make that last second game winning shot.

Weaknesses

For all of the intangibles that Williams has, he can be a little selfish with the ball. He’s a shooter and with most shooters they don’t like to pass the ball very much. This must improve if he really wants to help the team.

Lack of playing time in the big 10 and NCAA tournament. Williams played a lot last year against the smaller cup cake teams Ohio State was playing before the big 10 schedule started. Once it did, Williams rarely was on the court.

He’s a little small even for a shooting guard. At 6’2″ he has great size for a PG, but most SG are a little taller. He is strong though so that makes up for it.

I’m not saying that Williams is very weak defensively, but there is a lot to live up to at guard in at Ohio State. You are expect to play great defense, get after loose balls, and do a lot of dirty work. The question is, is Williams ready to do all that.

Role on the Team

Kam Williams should be the starting shooting guard for Ohio State during the 2015-2016 season. I see Marc Loving more as a SF

His role will be simple, score. His shooting and FT abilities could allow him to be Ohio State’s leading scorer this year. He could battle with Marc Loving for it

As a RS Sophomore, even with the little playing time he has, Williams will be one of the veterans on the team. He will be asked to be a leader on a very young team.
