The Buckeyes move a little bit closer to getting another class of ‘19 recruit.
We are now under 45 days until the Ohio State Buckeyes kickoff the 2018 college football season. While Urban Meyer and the rest of his coaching staff are facing high expectations for how they’ll guide this group of Bucks on the gridiron, they also have high expectations on the recruiting trail.
The 2019 and 2020 recruiting classes are starting to take shape, and they have the promise of being some of the best classes in the Meyer era. On Wednesday, good news came to the Scarlet and Gray as they made the cut for a 2019 defensive tackle’s top schools list.
Down to 4
D’Von Ellies (Owings Mills, MD / McDonogh School) is the 2019 prospect that trimmed his list down to four schools. In a Twitter post mid-morning Wednesday, Ellies let it be known that OSU, Rutgers, Virginia Tech and West Virginia were the four schools he will be focusing on.
Currently graded as a three-star DT, the Maryland native received offers from some pretty good schools. Tennessee, Nebraska, Maryland, and (reigning national champions) UCF all made it known that they wanted Ellies—but were left out of the top four.
At 6-foot-2, 280 pounds, the No. 7 product from MD will have his work cut out for him if he chooses any one of those four schools. OSU’s Larry Johnson, a former high school coach in Maryland, has taken the lead in the recruiting efforts of Ellies, according to 247sports. So far, the Buckeyes seem to be the leader in the clubhouse, as all three of the 247sports crystal ball projections has Ohio State as the team he’ll end up committing to.
But, if the proximity to home becomes a factor, then Virginia Tech and West Virginia may sneak up on the Buckeyes. Rutgers doesn’t seem like a contender, as Ohio State is already on the board. Combine that with VT and WVU, and it’s a game of ‘which one doesn’t belong’.
Since the Buckeyes made their offer in mid-May, they’ve been on Ellies’ radar—and likewise. If another DT were to make Meyer’s 2019 class, this McDonogh School product is the probable choice. We’ll keep you posted on any developments in Ellies’ recruitment to Columbus.
A wide open race
While Ellies cuts his choices down to four, class of 2020 wide receiver Rakim Jarrett (Washington, DC / St. John’s College HS) has nearly put all the cards back on the table. In an Instagram post, Jarrett listed a slew of schools and mentioned that his recruitment is “100% open.”
Recruitment 100% Open ! NO Top 4 NoMo
This is a stark contrast to a couple weeks ago, when Jarrett made a top four announcement of Alabama, Penn State, Ohio State and Florida State.
Ohio State seemed like a lock for the WR, but things apparently have changed, as the Buckeyes aren’t on this list; Florida State and Penn State, however, do show up on his Instagram post—as does Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin.
This shakeup is huge, as Jarrett would’ve been another wide out option in 2020. The Bucks are expected to have an exodus at that position due to graduation and early enrollment into the NFL Draft. Stacking up on WRs helps cushion the blow of a talent deficit, but that only works if recruits commit to the program.
There could be a number of reasons for why the commitment was reopened, but one thing is for certain: Ohio State will have a lot of work to do if they want Jarrett as a member of their 2020 recruiting class.
