Ohio State hockey defeats Canisius, 4-1

The Ohio State mens hockey team won their second straight game with a dominating 4-1 victory over visiting Canisius
Now this is a winning streak! The Ohio State mens hockey team extended their season long winning streak to two games on Friday night with a commanding 4-1 victory over Canisius at Value City Arena on Friday night.
The Buckeyes came in the favorites over fellowing struggling Canisius, as the 1-7 Bucks looked to take down the 2-5 Golden Griffins. The Bucks got off to a fast start with the team's clear best player, Nick Schilkey, finding sophomore Luke Stork for his third tally of the season at 8:28 of the first. That extended Schilkey's point streak to four games, over which he has three goals and seven points total. Shots on goal were 20-9 in favor of OSU in the period, so Canisius was lucky to still be breathing after that ludicrous display.
The second period would be much more closely contested, as OSU only outshot Canisius 13-11, but the lone goal came from a Buckeye as well as Matt Weis scored his fourth of the season off a feed by David Gust.
The Bucks would pretty much put away the Golden Griffins for good just 49 seconds into the third, as Gust was stoned on a breakaway, but Anthony Greco came in for the rare rebound goal of a saved breakaway to extend the lead to three. Not exactly the kind of goal you expect to see every day. It was Greco's third on the season with Gust obviously getting the primary assist.
Canisius would finally get one on the board at 2:38 of the third as Ralph Cuddemi scored his fourth of the season to reduce the lead to two. Things were pretty quiet after the period's fast start for about 12 minutes, until something pretty encouraging happened for OSU. Freshman Brendon Kearney scored his first collegiate goal at 14:37 and received assists on it from fellow freshman Dakota Joshua and Freddy Gerard. It's nice to see the most heralded freshman of the class, Joshua, getting on the board, and if the other two come along for the ride, it's all gravy, baby.
OSU outshot the Golden Griffins 13-10 in the third and 46-30 for the entire game. Matt Tomkins got the start for OSU and returned back to his solid self, posting a .967 save percentage. If he did that every game, he'd make prime Dominik Hasek look bad. It wasn't the highest of competition but you take solid goaltending where you can get it.
The two teams will close out the series on Saturday afternoon at Value City Arena. The puck drops at 4pm, so get ready for the Four Loko to the hopefully easy football victory today at noon's Pappy Van Winkle.
