Could Maxwell Lorca-Lloyd be headed to Columbus?
After being relatively quiet for the past few months after landing Alonzo Gaffney, the Ohio State Buckeyes basketball program was back in the news this past week. They picked up a commitment from five-star point guard D.J. Carton, moving their 2019 class into the top five of the team rankings, and giving Chris Holtmann his second five-star commitment at Ohio State.
It appears that the Buckeyes weren’t ready to be out of the news quite yet, because on late Monday night, they made another big move, extending an offer to Massachusetts power forward Maxwell Lorca-Lloyd.

The Lorca-Lloyd offer is big for a few reasons, the biggest being that Ohio State is still in need of a 2019 big—and he may be their solution. At 6-foot-9, 205 pounds, Lorca-Lloyd looks and plays a lot like the modern stretch four, which Ohio State has lacked in years past. I don’t think I’ll fully believe it until he visits Columbus, but Maxwell does seem to be a legitimate option for the Buckeyes.
The second biggest implication is how it impacts a bit more of a highly touted target, in Illinois power forward E.J. Liddell. Liddell is the biggest target remaining for the Buckeyes, and they’d love to pair him with Carton and Gaffney. I don’t think that this offer is meant to replace Liddell, and will serve likely as a backup plan if they don’t land him.
Incoming boom?
There had been some questions in recent weeks about when St. Louis wide receiver Marcus Washington would be announcing his commitment. He was scheduled to commit on his birthday, Aug. 7, for months now, but it seemed like he was considering moving it back, after visits several schools this summer (Ohio State was one of them). On Monday night however, he set the record straight.

Washington is the 143rd ranked player in the 247Sports composite rankings, and the 25th best receiver. He recently took a pretty sizeable tumble in some rankings, but it’s nothing Ohio State is too concerned about. He’s still a take for the Buckeyes, and all things indicate that Ohio State will be the choice.
Copycat?
In case the recent offer wasn’t enough, Chris Holtmann made some more news today, when he made an announcement that should sound pretty familiar to anyone that follows Buckeye football closely.
Chris Holtmann said he has adopted Urban Meyer’s Real Life Wednesday program, with his own spin on it. Holtmann said he calls it “Beyond Hoops.”

The “Real Life Wednesday” program has been a massive success for Meyer and the football program, and there’s no doubt that Holtmann has talked with him about how to implement it successfully. The program has helped Ohio State football tremendously, both in recruiting and in the development of their players as people, and it’s not hard to see why Holtmann wants to replicate it.
Running a future preparation program has become pretty common in college football, but I haven’t seen it a ton in college basketball. If it’s implemented properly, this could be a big deal for Ohio State’s development and their recruiting. Having seen Holtmann work in the past, it’s not hard to imagine him having lots of success with this.
