Team Scarlet and Gray is back with your Thad Matta-era favorites, and Team Big X has a couple recent Buckeyes to root for.
It’s here! Your now-annual way to re-watch some of the most dynamic players under former Ohio State men’s basketball coach Thad Matta and to catch a couple of Holtmann’s alumni too.
The 2018 edition of The Basketball Tournament is underway, with the Midwest Regionals taking place this weekend in Columbus. The games aren’t tipping off at The Schott, but they are just down the road at Capital University — still plenty close for local Ohio State fans to see some of their favorite alumni.
There are two teams featuring Buckeyes to keep an eye on during the tournament: Team Scarlet and Gray and Team Big X.
Team Scarlet and Gray
This is the real marquee event for Buckeye fans, with Scoonie Penn acting as the team’s head coach, and Evan Turner as the assistant. The roster includes fan favorites like Aaron Craft, David Lighty, Jon Diebler, Jared Sullinger, and William Buford — just to name a few.
The team sailed through last year’s regional games, winning each matchup by at least 10 points, and (surprise, surprise) Aaron Craft averaged 9.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 4.6 apg and 1.4 spg in last year’s tournament.
Craft and crew were knocked out of the 2017 TBT in the semi-final round, after dropping 88-83 thanks to a couple last-minute shots by their opponent, Team Challenge ALS.
Team Big X
This is the first year of the tournament for the Big Ten squad featuring two Buckeyes Andrew Dakich and Jae’Sean Tate, along with mostly Michigan alumni.
“Our team is about teaming up with guys from all over the Big Ten that spent their careers battling against each other. We feel TBT is the perfect platform to show off Big Ten hoops and our players skills. We have a bunch of guys who recently graduated from their playing day in college and are playing with a chip on their shoulders. We are young and ready to hoop!” - Jay Shunnar, GM
Considering the timespan between the Matta squad and Dakich and Tate, it’s not entirely surprising that they didn’t link up for the annual tournament. Not that there’s any love lost between the two, but Dakich might be a little bitter about all the support thrown at Team Scarlet and Gray over Big X.
