The women’s team hosts St. Lawrence in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal game.

Ohio State hockey had a mixed bag of results last weekend. The women’s hockey team was tripped up 6-2 by Minnesota in a WCHA Final Faceoff semifinal. Things looked good early on for the Buckeyes, with Jocelyn Amos and Joy Dunne netting goals in the first 9:23 of the game.

Unfortunately, those two goals would be the only tallies Ohio State was able to record in the game. The Golden Gophers scored six unanswered goals to clinch their spot in the conference tournament final. The loss marked the first time since 2019 that the Buckeyes weren’t able to reach the WCHA Final Faceoff Championship Game.

Despite the loss, Ohio State comfortably made the NCAA Tournament field with an at-large bid, earning the second-best overall seed. As one of the top three seeds, the Buckeyes earned a first-round bye.

Nadine Muzerall didn’t find out who her team would play until Thursday night when St. Lawrence and Penn State battled at OSU Ice Rink. The Saints beat the Nittany Lions 4-1 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals behind two goals from Abby Hustler and 32 saves from goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström.

The two schools met early in the season in October in New York, with Ohio State sweeping both games. The first matchup ended in a 3-2 win in overtime for the Buckeyes. The open game of the series was a back-and-forth affair.

After St. Lawrence took a lead at the 11:59 mark of the first period, Jenna Buglioni leveled the score just over four minutes later. Abby Hustler regained the lead for the Saints in the second period before Jocelyn Amos tied the game nearly halfway through the third period. Buglioni netted the game-winning goal just seven seconds into overtime to give the Buckeyes the win.

The second game of the series was another thrilling contest. This time, Ohio State jumped out to a lead after Riley Brengman scored a goal at 3:20 in the game. Taylor Lum would tie the score later in the first period before Kiara Zanon and Joy Dunne scored just over a minute apart to send the Buckeyes into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead. The Saints would regroup in the second with goals from Aly McLeod and Sarah Marchand to tie the score. Buglioni would again record the game-winning goal, followed by Amos adding an empty net insurance goal with 36 seconds left.

While Ohio State has a powerful offense to go along with veteran goaltending from Amanda Thiele, St. Lawrence hangs their hat on goaltending from Emma-Sofie Nordström, who has six shutouts and a 1.68 goals against average in 35 starts this year. Abby Hustler is the biggest offensive threat for the Saints, scoring 19 goals and 39 points this year. The only other St. Lawrence player who has scored at least 10 goals is Anna Segedi. Sarah Marchand, Aly McLeod, Kennedy Wilson, and Taylor Lum each have nine goals each.

St. Lawrence is making its second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Saints have made five trips to the Frozen Four, all of which occurred between 2001 and 2007. Despite being so close to a title, St. Lawrence is still looking to win its first national championship. The closest they came was in 2001, when they made the final.

The puck drop for tonight’s game between Ohio State and St. Lawrence is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN+. The winner of tonight’s contest will advance to the Frozen Four to face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between Clarkson and Minnesota Duluth.

Men’s hockey

Last weekend didn’t start off too hot for Ohio State’s men’s hockey team. Playing at Nationwide Arena, the Buckeyes dropped the first game of a best-of-three series against Wisconsin 4-1. Midway through the second period the Badgers had already built a 3-0 lead. The only goal scored by Ohio State came from the stick of Brent Johnson at the 4:19 mark of the third period. Wisconsin goalie Tommy Scarfone made 28 saves to put the Buckeyes in an early hole.

Things looked bleak for Ohio State in the first half of game two, as Wisconsin jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes finally got on the board when Jake Rozzi scored with just over three minutes left in the second period. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine would tie the game with 1:29 left in the third period to send the game to overtime.

Riley Thompson would ensure there would be a game three between the schools with his game-winning goal at 7:50 of the first overtime, marking the fourth straight year Ohio State has gone to a game three in their first round series of the Big Ten Tournament.

Rozzi would again score first for the Buckeyes on Sunday, but Wisconsin tied the game up just over a minute later when they netted a power play goal. The score would remain tied until Davis Burnside’s power play goal midway through the third period would put Ohio State in the lead. Max Montes scored an unassisted three minutes later, putting a little breathing room on Wisconsin, who would score with less than three minutes left but weren’t able to find a goal to tie the game. With the wins, the Buckeyes ran their record against the Badgers to 6-1 this season.

Next up for Ohio State is Penn State, who easily handled Michigan last week in Ann Arbor, beating the Wolverines 6-5 in overtime on Friday, followed by a 5-2 win on Saturday. With the two victories, the Nittany Lions have a record of 20-12-4 on the season. J.J Wiebusch was the star of the series opener, with his overtime goal not only winning the game for Penn State, it also capped off a hat trick. Wiebusch would add a goal in Saturday’s game, pushing his season total to 11 goals.

Pacing the Penn State offense is Aiden Fink, who has 23 goals and 28 assists this season. Charlie Cerrato and Reese Laubach each have scored 15 goals, Matt DiMarsico has netted 13 goals, followed by Danny Dzhaniyev’s 12 goals. Simon Mack has set up numerous goals for the Nittany Lions, recording 24 assists. Arsenii Sergeev has 17 wins, four shutouts, and posted a 2.63 goals against average between the pipes for Penn State.

The conference foes met four times during the regular season, with each school recording two wins. Ohio State swept the two games in Columbus in early December, beating the Nittany Lions 4-0 and 4-2. Penn State responded with a win in a shootout after a 6-6 game in late January, followed by a 3-2 win in overtime in State College.

Kristoffer Eberly started three of the four games at goalie for Ohio State, with Logan Terness only starting the finale between the teams. Expect to see Terness between the pipes for the Buckeyes on Saturday night since he has been getting the bulk of the starts at goaltender down the stretch.

Tonight’s game is slated to start at 8:30 p.m. ET at Value City Arena and can be seen on Big Ten Network. The winner will go on to meet the winner of the other semifinal between Michigan State and Notre Dame in the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game next Saturday. The winner of the conference tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
