The former Buckeye Heisman Trophy winner sees the potential that Haskins brings.
“But there are still plays on tape that can provide a glimpse at Dwayne Haskins and his immense potential — and few people are more qualified to break him down than a Heisman winner.”
- Austin Ward, Lettermen Row
Former Ohio State quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith joined Austin Ward at Lettermen Row to break down some of the film of new starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins. As he goes through and points out some good and bad things in Haskins’ game and why he can be successful at this level and beyond, what Smith saw was a future Heisman winner.
It’s a pretty neat sight to see Smith showing things that some might not notice that will be important to a future Buckeye QB. Smith also discussed his experiences playing in Ann Arbor, and some of the issues that he had to overcome in his career.
Smith was the last player at Ohio State to win the Heisman Trophy back in 2006, when he helped lead the Buckeyes to an undefeated regular season and a spot in the national championship game.
Haskins enters the 2018 season as a first-time starter, but expectations are high for the sophomore quarterback after he put on a show against Michigan last season in relief of an injured J.T. Barrett. He has the tools to succeed, and the talent around him is unquestioned, so it makes sense for the hype to build.
“[Preseason AP All-Americans] Defense: Nick Bosa, defensive end, Ohio State”
- Ralph D. Russo, Associated Press
The Associated Press released its list of preseason All-Americans for the upcoming season. Only one player from Ohio State was selected, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that the lone Buckeye representative was defensive end Nick Bosa.
The defensive end is entering his third season at Ohio State and it could very well be his last as he looks to potentially join his brother in the NFL. Last season Bosa accounted for 32 tackles and seven sacks, and was named first-team All-Big Ten.
Bosa also leads an impressive defensive line this season that features Chase Young, Robert Landers, and Dre’Mont Jones. Should Bosa have yet another great season (all signs are pointing to that being the case), he could play a large part in getting the Buckeyes back to the College Football Playoff and potentially competing for a national championship.
“Grinch is known for having an easy to grasp, player-friendly scheme. Perhaps he can help Schiano simplify the way OSU calls things.”
- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com
Ohio State hired Alex Grinch from Washington State during the offseason in what seemed to be a mostly popular hire. Grinch did some great things with the Cougars in his time there, and helped mold the defense that competed with some of the best offenses in the country.
It was also a good hire because current defensive coordinator Greg Schiano is probably not long for his current position, as he was almost hired as the head coach at Tennessee earlier this year.
Grinch seems to be the next in line to take over for Schiano, whenever he ends up leaving Columbus, and while the impact might not be felt too much this season, the Buckeyes are glad to have Grinch. Bill Landis took a look at how Grinch’s presence will be felt this season, mostly coming in third-down situations, but it will be nice to see Schiano and Grinch interacting, and perhaps learning things from each other.
Ohio State’s defense has been superb the past few seasons, and Schiano has been a big part of that.
