Ohio State falls to 1-7 in the Xfinity Center since Maryland joined the Big Ten.
The Ohio State men’s basketball team (5-3, 0-1) fell to the Maryland Terrapins (8-1, 1-0) 83-59 in one of the more forgettable performances in recent memory.
The Buckeyes were shorthanded coming into the first Big Ten game of the season, with Ques Glover, Colin White, and Aaron Bradshaw all out. Glover and White were out with injuries, and Bradshaw has missed four straight games now and is not with the team due to an investigation by the university.
The Buckeyes went with the same starting lineup since Bradshaw went out of Bruce Thornton, Meechie Johnson, Micah Parrish, Devin Royal, and Sean Stewart to open up the game.
Ja’Kobi Gillespie opened up the scoring with a three-pointer, while Sean Stewart answered with a push shot in the lane. After some back-and-forth scoring, Gillespie and Selton Miguel hit two three-pointers to make the score 12-6 Maryland heading into the first media timeout.
The Terrapins started the game 3-for-4 from three and used a full-court press to make Ohio State uncomfortable getting into its offensive sets. Devin Royal got off to a fast start for the Buckeyes, recording six of the team’s first eight points.
Rodney Rice got another bucket at the basket for Maryland, and the Terrapins took an early 18-8 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. In the first eight minutes, the Buckeyes were 4-for-9 from the field but had five turnovers. The Terrapins opened up an 11-0 run to take a 25-8 lead halfway through the first half.
Micah Parrish was able to draw two trips to the free throw line but only made two of the four to cut into the Maryland lead. Things quickly went from bad to worse for the Buckeyes, as the Terrapins suffocated the Ohio State offense and created their own shots with ease, taking a 50-17 lead with 43 seconds left in the first half.
Maryland missed a three-pointer to end the half to lead by 33 with 20 minutes remaining.
In the first half, Maryland scored 18 points off turnovers, while the Buckeyes scored 17 points. Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Derik Queen led Maryland with 13 points, while Devin Royal had 10 points to lead Ohio State.
Maryland’s 33-point lead at halftime is the largest halftime lead in any Big Ten conference game since the 1996-1997 season.
Maryland was 19-for-34 from the field and 5-for-13 from three-point range, while Ohio State was 6-for-21 from the field and 0-for-7 from three-point range. Maryland forced nine Ohio State turnovers and committed one of its own.
After the first four minutes of the second half, Ohio State found itself down by 40 (40!) points 63-23.
The Buckeyes did answer with two three-pointers from Meechie Johnson and John Mobley Jr. to get back to within...33 points.
To their credit, the Buckeyes showed some fight and cut the Maryland lead down to 24 and 75-51 with five minutes left in the game. A John Mobley Jr three-pointer cut the Maryland lead to 20 with three minutes left, but the talented freshman Derik Queen scored for Maryland to answer.
The two teams traded possessions and Maryland ended up winning 83-59 to move to 8-1.
Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Derik Queen led Maryland with 23 and 17 points, respectively. Tafara Gapare and Julian Reese added 12 and 10 points. Devin Royal and John Mobley Jr., led the Buckeyes with 18 and 15 points, respectively.
Here are four takeaways from the Ohio State blowout loss over Maryland.
It is hard to pinpoint exactly where a slow start dooms you when you are trailing 50-17 at halftime, but the 11-0 run Maryland went on to take a 25-8 lead with 11 minutes left in the opening half was where this one really got away.
In the first half, Maryland was 19-for-34 from the field and 5-for-13 from three-point range, while Ohio State was 6-for-21 from the field and 0-for-7 from three-point range. Maryland forced nine Ohio State turnovers and committed one of its own.
Anytime you go down 15 points in the first ten minutes of the game, you are digging a hole that is almost impossible to come back from, even though the game snowballed further.
The guards for Ohio State were looked at as a strength coming into the season, but they were a nonfactor in this game. Bruce Thornton, Meechie Johnson, and John Mobley Jr. combined for three points in the first half, shooting 1-for-9 from the field. With Aaron Bradshaw out, the guards have to pick up some of that slack and they simply did not show up for this one from the jump.
Some teams just simply struggle in certain places. Ohio State is one of them when they travel to the DMV to take on Maryland in College Park. The Buckeyes are 1-7 at the Xfinity Center at Maryland since they joined the Big Ten, with four of those losses coming by double-digits. On January 16th, 2016, Ohio State lost to Maryland 100-65 on the road.
There is no way to sugarcoat a loss like this. It is embarrassing and it is no secret that a loss that makes everyone laugh at you can derail an entire season, especially with how the Buckeyes lost to Pitt on Black Friday.
It is now up to the players and coaches to make sure that doesn’t happen. The next three games are brutal, and you have to win one or maybe two to save the season from snowballing. The Buckeyes host a solid Rutgers team on Saturday, so they need to wipe this from memory and split the December conference games.

Maryland goes #AnalyticallyFinal on Ohio State at the 17:03 mark, leading 58-19. It is the seventh-earliest #AF between power conference teams since the start of the 2014-15 season. https://t.co/ML0glcgGAz
