Offense not Offensive this year

Renard

Sophmore
Last year the Bucks Offense had to play against some of the highest ranked defenses in the country. It took a while for them to find...or should I say the coaches to find the offenses identity.

The coaches knew what they wanted the problem was the players themselves, "Getting it." Juggling the O-line and having a WR step up besides Santonio was the spark they needed. Add a little Gonzo and "The Shot Ginn" to free up a super talent and problem solved. Just a little late though. This is how last years offense did with first downs and points scored.

8th N.C. State 11Fd, 22pts scored*

9th Wisconsin 12fd, 13pts scored *

10th Iowa 12fd, 7pts scored

6th Penn State 13fd, 21pts scored **

29th Purdue 11fd, 17pts scored *

20th Tsun 18fd, 37pts scored *

- N.C. State turned the ball over 4 times for us making Tressel ball work for us.

-Against Wisconsin, Penn State, and Tsun a punt return provided a score in each.

-Also against Penn State an Interception provided another score.

-The Purdue game in which the "Shot Ginn" debuted, we had plenty of kinks to work out. With 4 second half turnovers the offense could have put up more points and won a game lost in the closing minutes.

Only three of these games were losses but the Bucks were only outplayed in two. Two others we should have lost but our defense and Nugent bailed us out.

What does that spell for us this season? To guess what this offense will do this year is tough to say the least. But I say things just might be looking up. Take a look at this years defenses the Bucks face. I know this is based on last year stats but what else do we have to go by?

The Texas defense was 12th in the country. Penn State returns 9 starters. Tsun and Iowa take some hits with 6 and 5 starters returning respectively. That’s two tough defenses and the jury is still out on the other two.

Three of these defenses we will play within the first five games of the season. This sounds like a daunting task. Because the Bucks offense has been pretty anemic since Joe Germaine left in 98'.

But I believe this Offense has something going for it we haven’t since 98'.

-Continuity and depth on the O-line.

-Leadership and experience at the quarterback position. Almost the same two headed QB?

-Lightning in a bottle with the receivers

-Young but very highly touted prospects to run the ball.

-A coaching staff that understands the talent and has designed an offense to bring each individuals strongest facet to bear.

I think things are looking up, my glass is half full. We have some big speed bumps to get over. But when they are that big sometimes you go sailing in the air like the Dukes of Hazard. Straight into a Rose Bowl I say.

Our ridiculous depth at WR is a huge plus. We can't repalce Ginn or Holmes, but we have some great talent to back them up. Our backups could put up some big numbers... think about what Zwick/Boeckman will do with Haw/Wells at RB and Dukes/Lyons/Hall at wideout...

The biggest thing is that I do not see us forcing the running game. I know JT has tried to do that, but realize that early on we did not have any consistent performers at WR not named Holmes. I think we will continue to see our squad work out of 3 WR sets... especially b/c it spreads the defense for our strength: speed.

Our OL was pretty good at pass blocking from about midseason on... it was run blocking that still has many people waiting to see what will happen in 05. The spring game was encouraging as split offensive squads were able to handle more talented split defensive squads (on paper at least... in terms of OL vs. DL/LB) and create running gaps we haven't seen in a long time.

The other thing to consider is that we don't have to pretend like we aren't a spread offense. Look at the players we brought in last year.
M Wells (scat back), Schoenhoft (cannon pocket passer), Robiskie (possession WR), DWIII/Hartline (athletic speedsters).
CWells & Ballard (plus some extra FB added later) will allow us to run the I formation in 06.

I don't think we are proven enough to let teams know we will run and still do it successfully. I think we can do it well enough, and break off big runs occasionally. We just need to keep the defense honest and keep the pass rush at bay... to open up our dynamic passing game.
