OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (National Champion, HC at USF, Buckeye OC for this postseason)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

I think Hartline will be like Urban. Absolutely a Buckeye to his core but while he isn’t on staff he’s going to go compete as hard as anyone. He won’t cut his own throat to do a coach at OSU any favors.

The biggest favor Urban did when he wasn’t the coach here was to call off the dogs on Tressel in 2006 after spending three quarters fisting his beloved Buckeyes. It’s just business at that level.

Hartline could absolutely end up taking some Florida recruits from us. Listen, in this day and age, if Texas Tech and IU can be a problem so can USF with a coach like Hartline. To dismiss it out of hand is being naive imo.

Everyone in division 1 ball is our enemy man. Every team out there can take recruits. You need to be a fucking savage to compete at this level. I was hoping Day had become a hardcore savage after that loss to TTUN last year. I hope I am right.
Lol, no they aren't. The lion doesn't concern themselves with the goings on of the sheep. Nobody has the energy to have 300+ enemies.

We dont get any recruits from FL? Wtf are you talking about. Listen I wish the world was a better place. Its not. Go read about all the crazy shenanigans that happen while these 18year olds are being recruited, its nuts.

I wish Hartline well, sincerely, but it's sink or swim for him. Thats just the nature of the beast.
Top shelf talent that USF is unlikely to land in lieu of us, yes, but not so much the in-state developmental high ceiling prospects that a decent USF program can keep away from the the bigger conference Florida schools that OSU is more likely to run into and that we tend to get from Ohio (#specialpowers). As for transfers, I’d rather see strong talent that can’t quite see the field much for us, steered out of the Big Ten. E.g., if Lincoln Kienholz decides to seek more opportunity elsewhere, I’d rather see him at USF than at some place like MSU, PSU, or UW.

So let me get this straight. You want to gift wrap 4 and 5 star players that OSU has invested millions into and give them to a coach that has been learning the inner workings of your organization for almost a decade? Also at that point all those 4 and 5 star guys will have a chip on their shoulders...

You guys can't be this nieve in your day to day life

If you dont think USF can compete your crazy. Shit just 5 years ago UCF was always in the running for the playoffs. FL has talent everywhere and the population has exploded over the last 5 years. I will be shocked if USF isn't a top 15 team in 2 years

Yes because USF has always been a juggernaut we’ve competed against for recruits.

You’re right about UCFs rise under Frost. And now they still aren’t a threat. How many big recruiting battles have we lost to these schools?

We are talking about a guy that is considered one of the greatest assistant coach recruiters of all time. But, your right if he about to get a 5 star reciever, he will just call up Day and offer him up.

Again remember this guy took the job when OSU is tyring to go back to back. And thats OK, but he doesn't deserve OSUs backing anymore

Players are going to make their own choices anyway. Nobody’s talking about gift wrapping anything to anyone, but yes, I’d rather see high talent players that we can’t keep regardless go to a non-P4 school that we’re unlikely to play than to have them in our conference and on our schedule. Also, attracting and keeping good assistants and players is to a large extent a reputation and relationship business, and if you play the ass too much word gets around and maybe the next Hartline that we could have had chooses to start climbing the ladder somewhere else.

Finally, let’s hold off a bit before acting like Hartline at USF is the next Saban at Alabama. Competitive fire is great, but his WR coaching genius doesn’t seem to have fully transferred to the OC level and now he’s stepping up again and has to build a staff and deal with all the other crap that comes with being a head coach. I think he’ll be pretty successful, but he might also be the latest in a long line of examples of the Peter Principle.

At no point did anyone say anything like that. Ever.
