COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State scored five runs with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning to blow open a one-run game on its way to a 8-2 victory over Oakland in front of 2,268 fans Wednesday night in non-conference action at Bill Davis Stadium.
All five runs scored with two outs after a ground out and a fly out to start the inning.
Justin Miller (Fr., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) singled to left and went to second when
Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) drew a walk.
Jonathan Zizzo (So., Youngstown, Ohio/Sarasota [Fla.]) scored miller with a single through the left side and then when
Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) sent a shot to center, that Oakland centerfielder, Brad Competty, dropped that would have been the third out of the inning. Both Zoeller and Zizzo came around to score. To give the Buckeyes a 5-1 lead.
Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) followed with his third triple of the season to score Angle from first and then
Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) delivered him with a slow dribbler to short to extend the Buckeye lead to six. Fryer's triple was the team's 17th this season.
The Buckeyes scored one more run in the eighth when pinch hitter
Chris Macke (So., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) drove in Zoeller with a single to center field. Oakland got that run back in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Kevin Chalifour that scored Bryan Marulli who doubled to lead off the inning.

Josh Barrera (Fr., Somerset, Ohio/Sheridan) pitched a solid six inning and struck out a career-high seven batters allowing just one run on three hits and a walk. He improved to 2-1 on the year.
Dan Barker (So., Dayton, Ohio/Northmont),
Trey Fausnaugh (Jr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) and
Rory Meister (So., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield) each pitched an inning in relief.
Ohio State broke the scoring drought with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Zizzo led off the inning with one of three walks in the inning by Oakland starter David Thomas. After a strikeout, Fryer singled to left to move Zizzo to third after he had stolen second. Bourquin walked and then all three runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, including Zizzo, who scored the first run of the game.
Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) walked to load the bases and then Fryer scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of
J.B. Shuck (Fr., Galion, Ohio/Galion).
Oakland scored in the top of the fourth, turning a lead-off hit by Kyle Crepeau into a run when Andy Shepherd singled up the middle with two out.
Fryer lead the Buckeyes' 11-hit offense in going 3-for-4. Bourquin was the only other player with multiple hits in a 2-for-3 night. Angle had a seven-game hit streak come to an end. Marulli led Oakland in going 2-for-4.
Thomas took the loss for Oakland (10-24) to fall to 2-1. He allowed two runs on four hits in 3.1 innings. A total of seven Golden Grizzlies pitched in the game.
Ohio State (21-11 overall, 6-6 in the Big Ten) will resume Big Ten play Friday at Indiana at 3:05 p.m. The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday at 1:05 p.m. before concluding Sunday with a single game at 1:05 p.m. Games three and four of the series will be broadcast on AM 920 WMNI and at ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
NOTE: Please note the correct game times for the Ohio State at Indiana series this weekend. Last spring, the Indiana state legislature voted to "spring ahead" to Eastern Daylight Time this year for the first time instead of staying on "standard" time. Currently, it is the same time in Indiana as it is in Ohio. Most Ohio State baseball schedules were printed with a one-hour adjustment from Eastern Standard Time to Eastern Daylight Time. The teams begin the series Friday at 3:05 p.m. and will continue play Saturday with a doubleheader at 1:05 p.m. The series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
