New York Transit Strike

kinch

Wash me
Okay, this sucks.

I have to walk a few miles to work today.

No trains, no busses, no livery, no car.

Sucks, sucks, sucks.

There are 7 or 8 million people that are very pissed about getting to work today. Hopefully I'll be able to hitchhike. . . I am debating whether to walk to a designated hitchhiking place, which is the opposited direction from my work, or whether to just slog in.

Pissed.

It is a lot warmer here than it is in Ohio right now.

I just checked - it is 22. Still sucks.

Go to www.hopstop.com if you ever want walking/subway directions in New York, Boston, or the D.C. (Or, for locals, the City, the Hub (though only newspapaers use this one), or the District  )

It tells me I have 2.32 miles to walk and it will take 1.25 hours. That sounds like some slow-ass walking and no jaywalking to me, so less than an hour really isn't that bad, at least it isn't freezing like in Ohio (and that weather is skipping us, it will get to 34 today and tomorrow and warmer on Thursday and Friday, so it shouldn't be that bad, I guess around 25 during walking time).

My co-worker called about meeting me midway - he is walking 5 miles from Brooklyn. Ha ha ha!!

Okay - just to ship this to the politcal forum. . .

From what I have heard (read: not fact-checked) the workers make at least $47,000 now and want an 8% raise each of the next three years.

Okay, raise your hands if you think a girl sitting behind a glass booth, who doesn't even sell tokens anymore, and her husband sweeping the floors deserve to make $125,000 or whatever a year? What-the-fuck-ever.

Where's Reagan when you need him? This is a necessary service. Billions will be lost, potentially, it being the holidays and the center of the business world and all. I am not necessarily opposed to unions-- hey the womans' and childrens' suffrage stuff was cool-- but give me a break. Can 'em. Hire all new ones. Get training now. Furthermore, I hope nobody needs to go to a hospital today, or get chemo, or get dialysis (sp?), etc. Bastards.

Ah, I'd say $35,000 is like $20,000.

About that.

An apartment here for $2000 would get a similar size in Columbus for about $250 to $500 for one bedroom, getting much more disparate as you add bedrooms. (hard to equate a $2500 300 sq. ft. place to anything in Columbus though). Cars are expensive, parking is at least $350 a month, campbells soup is $2.79. . . Dining out isn't that much different. Gas may be cheaper. Public transportation. . .

I just moved my sister and her roommated into a place in Tudor City last week. She got a two bedroom one bath apartment, with windows on both sides of the apartment for around $3,000. And let me say that it is an absolute steal at that price. Less than $3,000 with a doorman? You don't find that everyday. I lived in a similar place in Fleetwood, and it was around $2,000. That same place would probably cost less than $1,200 in the newer parts of downtown Columbus. This is one of the reasons why I moved back to Ohio.

The newest offer from the MTA called for raises of 3%, 4% and 3.5% over the next three years. The union wants to dip into the supposed $1 billion surplus the MTA is expected to have by year's end. The MTA says that while they will have a large surplus, they are expecting to run in the red the next few years due to increased costs of benefits and salaray raises, thus eating up that surplus.

I think that years ago, when created, unions served a good purpose. Now, however, I think that they get in the way and hinder progress more than anything else.

I totally agree with kinch- the glass booth subway job doesn't sound like $47,000 to me.

By the way, getting back to my point in another thread regarding teachers' salaries- how much do starting elementary school teachers make in NY? Less than or equal to $47K, I'd guess. Who's worth more?

Kinch - Call up NYBuck and ask for a lift. He'll have you there in no time. :wink2:

Actually - I walked. Not bad bc my firm is allowing biz casual during the strike. It really isnt bothering me that much at all.

As far as the strike itself - I dont know why they dont stop this fast. The union is breaking the law. There is a VERY low % of skilled workers - the traffic controllers and some maintenance people. First - fracture the union by giving these people 15% raises immediately. Given the low % - it wont cost that much. For the rest - give them 6 hours to report to work or they are fired and lose their pension. It takes 5 min to teach someone to push a button or drive a subway car or work a booth. Watch how fast the strike is over. And watch how long it will be until the next one.....
