ACC implements new hurricane policy

Teams could be forced to play homes games on road

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Approaching hurricanes could force Miami, Florida State and other Atlantic Coast Conference schools to play home games on the road.

With open dates becoming scarce and hurricanes seemingly becoming more common, the conference announced a new policy Tuesday that established strict rules regarding the rescheduling of games affected by natural disasters.

"Hopefully it won't come into play," ACC commissioner John Swofford said as the league wrapped up its preseason media days. "But we feel like we need to be as prepared as we can be for it and hope we don't have to use it."

The new league policy states that every effort will be made to play the game at its scheduled site on an alternate date prior to the conference championship game.

But open dates are few and far between with the addition of a 12th game, leaving little chance of rescheduling.

"There's not a lot of wiggle room there," Miami coach Larry Coker said.
If the game can't be rescheduled at the same site on an alternate Saturday, the league may move the game to another day provided both schools have a minimum of seven days of rest before the game. If that's not possible, the teams could play with as few as five days of rest, but only if both schools have the same amount of rest.

If schedules prevent changing days, the game may be moved to a neutral site or to the home field of the visiting team and played on its original date.

For example, Virginia Tech is scheduled to play at Miami on Nov. 4. If league officials thought the game would be unsafe to play in Miami because of an impending or recent hurricane, and scheduling conflicts prevented it from being moved to another date, the game could be switched to a neutral site or to Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va.

Another option would be to reschedule the game on the same weekend as the ACC championship game, but that would happen only if the outcome had no bearing on the division races.

"You start out trying to keep it in the same site," Swofford said. "But in order to maximize the flexibility of what we might need to do, we felt like we needed our schools to have in front of them well in advance various contingencies."

I must admit, I read the title and thought this might be some under-handed means by which the ACC made sure Coker and the Canes wouldn't be embarrassed again this season.

I thought that maybe they were considering a different mode of transportion for the 'Canes...
