The graduate senior was the lone amateur to make the cut, and will finish as the low amateur of the 88th Masters Tournament
Neal Shipley has earned himself a tee time at Augusta National this weekend.
Shipley, a graduate student at The Ohio State University, shot rounds of 71-76 to shoot 3-over in the first two rounds of the 88th Masters Tournament to make the cut. Shipley was T17 and 1-under after the first round, and started his second round with birdies on holes No. 2 and 3.
Friday’s second round played tough, with winds gusting and golfers making big numbers all over the course. Shipley recorded six bogeys, a double bogey on No. 11, and birdies on No. 13 and 15 to finish 3-over and T38 to safely fall within the cutline.
He made bogeys on holes No. 4, 7, 10, 12, 14, and 18. He finished ahead of major winners Jordan Spieth, Sam Burns, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Brian Harman, and Adam Scott, amongst others.
Christo Lamprecht, Santiago De La Fuente, Stewart Hagestad, and Jasper Stubbs were the other amateurs to earn a spot in the tournament, all of them missing the cut.
The Masters is one of golf’s four major championships, and it takes place annually at Augusta National. Shipley was paired with Mike Weir, the 2003 Masters champion and the only Canadian to win a major championship and Ryo Hisatsune. Shipley earned his spot in the Masters by finishing as the runner-up in the 2023 U.S. Amateur, falling to Nick Dunlap in the finals.
Shipley's impressive run to the final match at the 123rd U.S. Amateur earned him his tee time at Augusta. He finished 1-under through the 36-hole stroke play portion and tied for 38th place. He was the No. 47 seed.He defeated the 2022 U.S. Junior Amateur Champion, Wenyi Ding. He then defeated Calum Scott of Scotland in 20 holes in the Round of 32.
Shipley beat Cooper Jones in the Round of 16 and Andi Xu in the Quarterfinals. He defeated John Marshall Butler 2 and 1 in the Semifinals to meet up with Dunlap in the 36-hole championship match.
However, even though they were tied after the first 18 holes, Dunlap won four of the next nine holes and pulled away from Shipley for good.
