ND can cash in this year

My ND friend just came in and informed me of something pretty interesting. Everybody knows ND currently gets all of the money for going to/winning a BCS game and doesn't have to share it with any conference affiliation. Everybody should also know that they negotiated a new deal that gives them BCS money every year, regardless of how much they suck and never make a BCS bowl game....and if they do make a BCS bowl game, they wouldn't get as much.

That second situation starts next year, and by the looks of their cake walk schedule.......it looks like the game against Tennessee is for the chance to play in a BCS game. Basically, they are playing for however much money BCS winners get.....like $14 million or so?

This is the only year they will be allowed to keep all the BCS winnings, as next year would start the new contract. Talk about pressure.

edit: i'm a dummy
We've all made mistakes - but man that ends up being damned funny.
And its 2006 when the Notre Dame discount plan kicks in.

Any details on this new deal? Why in the world is the BCS giving them money even if they don't make a BCS bowl?
Under the new contract, where does Notre Dame fit in?

We have addressed the Notre Dame issued. I think this has already been announced because I think it has already been settled. Beginning in 2006, Notre Dame would access automatically with a top eight ranking. We're treating Notre Dame differently from a financial perspective going forward also. In the past, Notre Dame, when it was in the game, it received a share just like a conference. Under the new structure, we're going to give Notre Dame an annual share of revenue that is similar to what an annual share would be for a member of any conference that would have automatic qualification. In that year when they do qualify, they would receive an at-large share, not a full-conference share. That share is currently $4.5 million. They would get an annual share, whether they play in a game or not, and an annual share, if I'm not mistaken, is a little over $1 million.

So Notre Dame would get guaranteed income?

That's correct.

How did that go over with Notre Dame?

They've accepted it. That's been something we agreed to.

How would they count for qualification?

We have enough spaces of at-large positions if you will. So it's expanded by two positions. Notre Dame could fill one of those spots of the four and there would still be a position for a coalition conference qualifier and there will still be two at-large positions.

Notre Dame would still be eligible to be selected in the pool of eligible teams if they fall below eight. We haven't set yet that pool of eligible teams. Right now, it's nine wins and top 12. That may be expanded because of these extra at-large positions.

In the past, what was Notre Dame's payout if they qualified?

They got a full conference share. This past year, it was a little more than $14 million. They haven't qualified every year in this structure so they're going to be making up annual payments to help offset any loss in that regard. The idea behind it is Notre Dame is treated like a member of a conference that has annual automatic qualification.
