The NCAA is investigating the Southern Mississippi men's basketball program for potential rules violations under former coach Donnie Tyndall, multiple sources confirmed to CBSSports.com on Thursday afternoon.

Tyndall is now the head coach at Tennessee.

The investigation, first reported by Bleacher Report, is focusing on how tuition and other expenses were paid for some recruits who signed with the Golden Eagles but were not yet eligible for scholarships.

NCAA investigation could mean bad things for Donnie Tyndall at UT

There's a way to get done what Donnie Tyndall -- or somebody connected to the Southern Miss program he ran from April 2012 to April 2014 -- allegedly got done.

It's in violation of NCAA rules, certainly.

But it's smart and difficult for the NCAA to catch.

Need to handle expenses for a player before you can put him on scholarship?

Here's how you do it: You instruct the player to get an apartment near campus, enroll in classes and max-out on student loans. Tell him to get as much student-loan money as he can. Buy a nice TV. Hook an Xbox One up to it. Live life. Enjoy. And don't worry about a thing because those student loans will be "handled" down the road, one way or another.

Five years later, a booster will pay the balance off.

Maybe wait 10, just to play it safe.

"That's absolutely the way you'd do it," one coach told me Thursday. But, I'm told, that's not the way Tyndall -- or somebody connected to the Southern Miss program he ran from April 2012 to April 2014 -- allegedly did it, point being the first-year Tennessee coach now has some kind of mess on his hands.

"This was way sloppier than that," a source told CBSSports.com.

Donnie Tyndall to meet with NCAA

Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall is expected to meet with the NCAA on Tuesday, sources told ESPN.com.

The NCAA is investigating Donnie Tyndall for his actions during his time at Southern Miss.

Tyndall is being investigated by the NCAA for potential issues related to his tenure at Southern Mississippi. Tyndall spent two seasons at Southern Miss, taking the program to the NIT in 2013 and 2014 before being hired at Tennessee this past offseason.

Bleacher Report earlier reported that Southern Miss was under NCAA review for potential rules violations, which included improper financial aid for players. Sources told ESPN.com that the players in question are Matt Bingaya and Shadell Millinghaus.

Southern Miss issued a statement confirming the review but did not provide any details and said it would have no further comment. Tennessee also said that it's aware of the situation and that it did a full review of Tyndall before his hire.
