Even though the former Buckeye dropped to the No. 48 selection, his fellow draft peers think he was a steal.
This past NBA Draft saw a lot of talented basketball players hear their names get called. But, how does the class itself think it’ll end up when the 2018-2019 season comes to a close? NBA.com caught up with members of the 2018 draft class, and asked questions including who players thought would be Rookie of the Year, which rookie will have the best career, and who was the steal of the draft at the position they were drafted?
For that latter question, the consistent answer was former Ohio State Buckeye forward. Keita Bates-Diop, who went 48th overall to the Minnesota Timberwolves, was determined by his draft peers to be the biggest steal of the class. KBD received 13 percent of the votes—just leading Michael Porter Jr. and Lonnie Walker IV, who each received 10 percent of the votes. Last year, Utah’s Donovan Mitchell was voted as the steal of the draft.
If you’re a fan of Buckeye State basketball in general, the survey showed some more good news. Collin Sexton, who went to the Cleveland Cavaliers, tied DeAndre Ayton (the No. 1 overall pick) as who the class thought would be named Rookie of the Year. Both received 18 percent of the vote.
Chicago’s Wendell Carter Jr. was declared as the one draft pick who would have the best overall career; he received 13 percent of the vote. Trae Young was named best shooter with 47 percent, as well as being named best playmaker.
Unsurprisingly, when asked who their favorite player in the NBA was, 29 percent of the class said it was LeBron James.
