Natasha Richardson dies in fall on beginner's ski slope

Natasha Richardson, a film star, Tony-winning stage actress and member of the famed Redgrave acting family, died Wednesday after suffering injuries in a ski accident, according to a family statement. She was 45.

Richardson, wife of actor Liam Neeson, was injured Monday in a fall on a ski slope at a Quebec resort about 80 miles northwest of Montreal. She had two sons with husband Liam Neeson.

Richardson's family released a statement saying, "Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."

According to a statement from Mont Tremblant Ski Resort, Richardson fell during a lesson on a beginners' trail.

Head injuries are very dangerous, and their effects can manifest themselves in unpredictable ways. She seemed just a bit woozy right after she fell; only later did the neurological damage become apparent. Very tragic.

This incident only underscores why I say if I were Blake Griffin's parent, I'd be watching him very closely right now. Lots of observers have said he just doesn't seem the same after his collision that resulted in a concussion. It may be that concussion was not the only damage he suffered.

My wife and I wear helmets while skiing/boarding - mainly to protect us from other idiots, though I feel better about skiing in the trees with a helmet on...

She was not. I still can believe helmets are not mandatory at all resorts for kids. You can be the best skiier on the slopes but it's the other idiots you have to worry about.

Freak accident but enough to re-inforce the reason we all wear helmets.

I heard that she signed a waiver when she refused medical treatment shortly after she fell.
