My emails with Mark Starr

I make fun of people time after time after time who stop and email some douchebag "journalist" who decided to rip Ohio State just to see how big his email inbox could get....so I'm not exactly proud of what I did when I saw this "article" by Mark Starr in Newsweek. Here are the emails anyway. I await tibor's response to my whining, as well as Thump's not-as-good-as-tibor-but-damn-it-he's-trying baiting. The email was titled, "You're Number 0!"

Sorry to burst your bubble, hack, but...

Don't let facts get in the way of a good story.
Starr said:
jeff--i can read. they won't recruit a felon. and they don't have to in this case because if he gets convicted, he will be in jail. but how about if he pleads them down to misdemeanors. don't see the a.d. talking about that, tho it will be his second criminal conviction. given the ohio state track records, i'd think ohio state fans would be embarrassed, not proudly sending articles about how they won't recruit felons. my god, that's pathetic. my facts were right. it was testified to in open court so that he could visit columbus. rgds, mark
me said:
Try again.
#1. If he was to become a member of the Ohio State football team, it would
be an embarassment.
#2. He won't. You state you can read, but you apparently can't
comprehend.....or at least bother to do the research.
Without an official visit to the school, he won't be accepted. He can commit
to whatever school he wants, but that doesn't mean squat. Hell, I can commit
to USC tomorrow. That doesn't mean they recruited me or that I'll be on the
team.
You see, there's this thing called the NCAA. They prohibit schools from
talking about recruits. This means Mr. Lazear can claim he's getting
messages from Ohio State and Alabama all he wants, and they can't deny it.
I'm guessing you never called Ohio State to get their side before you wrote
your "article". An "article" which was designed to see how many emails it
could draw. You're not the first hack that's used Ohio State to get hits and
you won't be the last. It's pathetic, as are you.
Bottom line, on National Letter of Intent day Mr. Lazear won't be sending
one to Ohio State, because he won't have one. Then I'm sure you'll write up
an article about how Ohio State did the right thing, right?
Starr said:
the only question would be why he wasn't at ohio state. because they weren't recruiting him--and his testimony in court was a lie--or they got gunshy when the post ran the story. you can have your opinion on that, i have mine. rgds, mark
me said:
Why he wasn't at Ohio State? Uh, because Ohio State doesn't want him. I
doubt newspaper or magazine articles dictate who Ohio State does and does
not recruit....despite what you believe.
It's OK though...we all know your schtick. Running low on article ideas?
Write something making fun of Ohio State and you'll get a freebie followup
article when you publish the emails from the idiot Ohio State fans. You'll
leave out the emails from reasonable people. Nothing here is new.
Starr said:
jeff--well, all i can tell you is that i respond to it, the thoughtful and idiotic alike. and if you think that's standard, you would be wrong. i gave you a courtesy of a thoughtful response, not a dimissive one. rgd

And here's my response:

Starr said:
the operative word is "no longer." and you can thank the washington post for that
me said:
HAHAHAHAHAHA.
Yeah, the Washington Post designates who Ohio State recruits. The only thing
the Washington Post did was write a factless article forcing Ohio State to
come out publicly and say they weren't recruiting the kid.
"No longer" refers to the fact that recruitment on him started on March 8th
of this year at the latest. (Found with something you know nothing about, 5
minutes of research). The robbery occurred on March 30th. Give a few days
for fact checking and the like, and you have your effective date of "no
longer" being recruited in probably early April. They weren't about to make
a statement to the press saying this because vultures like you weren't
whining about it then.
Anything else?
Starr said:
i gave you the respect of several responses. you respond with more insults. so i will leave you with one final thought on the ohio state football program. when the apr (academic progress rate) results were announced, which reflect how a school is complying with graduation progess and rates for its athletes, ohio state's score was below the minimum requirement and, of the 52 teams playing in bowl games, only five (ucla, toledo, arizona state, university of central florida and alabama) had lower rates. if you want to read the report, it's in the archives of the institute for diversity and ethics in sport. not much to be proud of there.
me said:
What does that have to do with what we were discussing? Are you a child? Can
your daddy beat up mine?
Starr said:
jeff--goodbye. don't bother sending any more insults. i will not be reading any more of your e-mails.

The first link worked for me:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14838899/site/newsweek/

It's his story about Pat Lazear.

The second link didn't when I clicked it, but it did when I copied and pasted. Here is what it says:
Ohio State clarifies involvement with prospect Posted 9/15/2006 3:01 AM ET E-mail | Save | Print | Subscribe to stories like this

swapContent('firstHeader','applyHeader');From wire reports
The Ohio State athletic department issued a statement Thursday with regard to a controversial high school prospect at Wheaton (Md.). High School in the Washington, D.C., suburbs: "Ohio State University does not bring in for an official visit or sign any recruit who either has a pending felony charge or who has been convicted of a felony."
The school would not attach the names of either athletics director Gene Smith or coach Jim Tressel.
Pat Lazear, a highly touted running back/linebacker, faces a Nov. 29 trial on armed robbery charges.
He was quoted last week in The Washington Post as saying he is still receiving text messages from coaches at Ohio State and Alabama and that he plans a recruiting trip to Ohio State in October, though he needed special permission from a judge to travel.
He is wearing a monitoring device. The Post said he likely will choose between OSU and Alabama.
The third works about as well as the second. Here's the conent:
[FONT=arial,sans-serif] COLUMBUS - Ohio State no longer has interest in recruiting linebacker Pat Lazear, a Maryland high school football player facing armed robbery charges.

The Buckeyes would not and can not comment on specific recruits because of NCAA regulations, but in a statement the school said, “We would not sign or bring in for any official visit any recruit who has a pending felony charge or who has been convicted.”

Lazear is awaiting trial on Nov. 29, charged by police with driving the getaway car when he and three classmates robbed a smoothie shop of $463. Lazear is currently playing for Wheaton High School while wearing an ankle monitor so authorities can track him.

The Washington Post reported in a story a week ago that Lazear had 20 scholarship offers but would likely choose between Alabama and Ohio State. The Birmingham News reported today that Alabama is no longer recruiting Lazear as well.

Lazear, who is 6-foot and 229 pounds, is ranked as the No. 9 inside linebacker by the Internet scouting service rivals.com. He had 124 tackles and 12 sacks as a junior.

You got your point across, but the insults diluted it. I love the way he brough up that one point about grad rates. Where did he get that? I have read many positive things about our academic progress.

That did have 0 to do with the point your were discussing, but what the hell.

His article deserved insults. It was pretty clear throughout the whole thing he was just slinging mud for the sake of getting his hands dirty.

Hey man, you put this e-mail correspondence out here for us to read and comment on.

Don't get defensive when someone critizczes your style.

Well BN27 I just read the transcript between you and Mr. Starr an all I can say is that you're no better than the other morons who e-mail papers and the like. I agree with JCOSU that the insults took away from your point.

You had a valid point but it got lost in your insults.

It's like you're were arguing with Tibor or me on a messageboard.

To be taken seriously you have to write seriously and be succinct in your argument.

Again, good point but bad execution.

I think a better response to his out-of-the-blue APR comment would have been to give him the facts on which football team has led the Big-Ten in Academic All-Big Ten selections for each of the last 4 years.

Or, since the discussion is about recruiting, we could point to the cumulative GPA of this year's freshman class, who will surely be helping to raise that APR over the next few years.
