OSU's Tressel roots for Zips

Coach got his start with UA

By Marla Ridenour - Beacon Journal sportswriter

<!-- begin body-content --> COLUMBUS - Ohio State coach Jim Tressel remembers his roots. So when the University of Akron plays in its first Division I bowl game today, Tressel will be pulling for the school that gave him his start in coaching.

Jim Dennison hired Tressel as a graduate assistant in 1975 and Tressel later coached quarterbacks, receivers and running backs from 1976-78. He earned a master's in education from UA in 1977.

"To have my graduate alma mater going to their first bowl game and having won their first championship, I'm excited for them,'' Tressel said. "They will have the time of their lives and it will be a great thing to build on.''

When Tressel was at Akron, the Zips went to the national-championship game in Division II, losing 24-13 to Montana State.

Tressel also has a tie to Zips coach J.D. Brookhart, who works at Tressel's camps. The two became friendly when Tressel coached at Youngstown State and went to Pitt to visit Brookhart.

"We took one of his concepts and it was huge for us at Youngstown State,'' Tressel said. "J.D. is a great teacher.''

BTW, I gave the names of all you folks who bet on Memphis to Tressel...

I'll be rooting for Akron's defense to put the clamps on De Angelo Williams. Is Akron's defense any good? Here is to hoping that Jerome Harrison's rushing title stays safe.

Everyone in my bowl pool this year picked the same freaking teams. If Akron loses today, I'm out already, after losing only 2. Gooooo ZIPS!

Didn't they do a decent job against the guy from No Ill when they won the title game, or did they just outscore them?

Screw Akron. I can't belive how frigging terrible this offense is...absolutely awful. The receiver drops everything, the QB bounces the ball to guys...I'm screwed. On the flip side, the D was really good, except for the D-back who couldn't stop a pass of over 20 yards. The kid from Massillon Jackson is a warrior.

And I'm frigging tired of the D'Angelo Williams spooge-fest. I'm sure he's a fine young man and all, but any guesses as to how many 100-yard games he would have had in the Big 10? 12? 15 maybe? Gaining 100 playing UAB and Houston every week doesn't impress me much.

My thoughts exactly Bucklion.

I'm sure he deserves a ton of respect, due to players like Randy Moss (who's been a success in the NFL IMHO) putting up gaudy numbers at a school in a middle-tier conference, but let's be honest...look who he's running against.

Thanks...and I'd say there isn't anyone who would say Moss hasn't been an NFL success...he had a great run (which is over now). But the 85 yards against Mississippi (2-9 or something) is telling...no way he gains anywhere near what he has playing in the SEC or Big 10.
