Many of you know Mitch Alboum from his Tuesdays With Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Here is his day after piece on the BCS Bowl game. I thought about not posting it because of the "sour grapes" aspect of presenting this on an OSU fan board, but what he has to say just hits home with me and I think it will with many of you. I might add that though Alboum writes for the Detroit Free Press it is obvious that he is a Big 10 fan, not just a Michigan fan.

College football: The ends junk the means

Before we close the book on the college football season, I wonder if you had the same feeling I did watching Florida trounce Ohio State for the national championship. It didn't leave me cheering. It didn't leave me satisfied. It left me depressed.

College football is a mess. Of all our major sports, it is the most confused and the most hypocritical....

It's a good read. However, Tibor is right, having the game sooner wouldn't have changed the fact that the players and coaching staff weren't prepared. Someone here said it best "They went to get a trophy and a football game broke out."

I realize I'm on the record saying that a playoff would be nigh-impossible due to money concerns, and I know it's money concerns that spread out the bowl season (so bowls don't conflict with each other) but my ideal solution would be to compact the bowl season anyway.

I'd say let the regular season run from the first weekend in September to Thanksgiving weekend. Back to the 11-game season, first of all, and a 12th game at conference discretion, as that makes 12 weeks (there were this year, anyway). Let the conferences, or even the schools, decide if the 12th game would be beneficial or not. Play the conference championships over Thanksgiving weekend. Have the championship game on New Year's Day, along with a whole bunch of the other good bowls, and play the rest of the bowls on the approaching weekends and holidays. Waiting another whole week after New Year's.....that sucks.

Oh, and finals? Professors almost always make exceptions for students who can't take a final at the designated time. Or, here's a novel idea, let the player miss a practice. Finals is a poor excuse, because Albom's right: they always mess up finals anyway.

I concur. I don't think it would have made a big difference for the game, but that extra week was ridiculous. Especially having the game on a Monday !?
I think the Bowl Schedule should have the BCS bowl hosting the Championship on Christmas or the day after, and the Championship on the 2nd (or the 1st for the Rose site, so the NC now coincides with the festivities). Then split the other 3 BCS so theres 2 on the 1st, and 1 on the 2nd (as a warmup for the NC).

Any excuse that uses final exams is beyond weak seeing as how schools on the quarter system have finals at a different time than schools on the semester system.
