How does everyone think the coaching staff matchup will play itself out? The gut reaction is to say this is a strong advantage for Ohio State, but it should be noted that Miles has beaten 6 different coaches who have won crystal trophies:

Stoops
Fulmer
Meyer
Saban
Spurrier
Coker

that's also not including Tubberville who is an outstanding coach and in 2004 did everything he could have done to get that crystal trophy, or Beamer who is one of the most respected coaches in the game.

Don't get me wrong, I think Tressel is the best coach in the country and I would still give OSU the advantage in this category, but a much smaller advantage than a lot of people would give as a gut reaction.

Tressel "owned" him in the '04 Alamo Bowl

Wow, I hope your staff and players think of our team as being on the same level as 2004 Oklahoma State.

I don't think anyone would be so foolish to suggest that this year's LSU team is comparable to that Oklahoma State team.

However, to anyone who watched the game, it was quite obvious that Tressel's team was far more motivated and prepared to play than Miles' team was.

I thought he was being sarcastic, but you never can tell on a computer.

Also I'm sure this Ohio State team is much better than the 04 Ohio State team, but not the kind of dramatic difference between us and 04 Pokie State.

No question that Ohio State was much more motivated and ready to play that Alamo Bowl, if there is that kind of difference in this game then we are going to get smoked and we will deserve it. No excuse whatsoever for letting someone out-hussle or out-execute you, especially in a national championship game.

Ultimately the circumstances were so different for that game that I don't think it's relevant in terms of trying to predict this game.

eh thats debateable, we had one scholie qb who could play in that game.

that being said it doesnt really matter.

miles to most of us appears as a river boat gambler, tressel isnt as conservative as hes labeled, though dont kid yourself, he keeps it close to the vest...

I have been as unbiased and as respectful of Ohio State as any LSU fan I have seen, but trying to argue that the difference between 04 Ohio State and 07 Ohio State is the same or close to the difference between 04 Oklahoma State and 07 LSU is ridiculous.

Its one thing to beat guys who have won crystal trophies, its quite another to beat someone for the crystal trophy.

Tressel has beaten both Coker and Mack Brown. One of those wins is quite a bit more notable than the other. Of course he lost to Mack-- and Vince Young once too- but... hey who cares... he's also beaten Joe Pa and Carr and lots of other guys with serious hardware, too... and in games with a lot on the line.. but... these opportunities don't come along every day... so, when you beat someone says as much as who you beat.

If someone was making an actual comparison between the teams I'd totally agree with you but I think you read a little too much into smith403's comments... his comment about Tressel "owning" Miles in the 2004 Almo bowl has as much bearing in this game as Miles beating the 6 coaches you mention in your first post. Both coaches have proven they can win big games.
