CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Miami fired defensive line coach Greg Mark on Monday, a surprising development for a team with the nation's top-ranked defense.
Mark's responsibilities will now fall to defensive coordinator Randy Shannon, Hurricanes coach Larry Coker said in a terse, short release sent out by school officials Monday.
''This is a private, in-house matter and I will have no further comment,'' Coker said. ''We will now move forward with our preparations for the Georgia Tech game on Saturday.''
A message left at Mark's home was not immediately returned.
The Hurricanes (5-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) are yielding 227.1 yards per game, the lowest in the nation. Teams are scoring an average of 10 points against Miami, good for second-fewest nationally behind Viginia Tech. And Miami's pass defense efficiency rating is 75.38, also the nation's best by a wide margin.
Mark, 38, was one of four former Hurricanes on the coaching staff. A 1991 graduate, Mark was an All-American in 1989 after recording 15 1/2 sacks to help the Hurricanes win the school's third national championship.
He was a graduate assistant at Miami from 1992 through 1994, spent 1995 as the defensive line coach at Utah State and returned to the Hurricanes in 1996.

Well, I like to bash the college football pundits on occasion, but since Cryami is first in total defense, and second in scoring defense, I think they were right on this one. Which, as you suggest, does make the untold story of the dismissal more intriguing.

First as in giving up the least amount of yards.....to an average ranking offense of 78th (including Duke and Temple ranked 115 and 116).

I already got into it with a Miami fan over this. Our average ranked offense for our opponents was around 28 or so.

None the less, they are leading in those catergories and the dismissal of the position coach that leads that charge is substantial. If they were 80th in total defense and had the least number of sacks in the ACC, then I could see a change being warranted.

But there is a lot more going on here. Tom Friend is on the next flight to Miami/Dade.

I had Cryami as the one to knock of V. Tech in Blacksburg. How they handle this shake-up will influence my thoughts on whether they can pull off the late season upset.

Not as bad as losing the DC under similar circumstances, but certainly NOT good.

Thing is that none of those - in and of themselves - add up to reasons to fire their D-line coach.

If its the thing about his daughter then that could get UM into a heap of trouble on a legal basis FMLA and the like.

If its the clashes with coaches and staff that seems more reasonable - but wouldn't you have had to had something really over the top happen when the coach is fully executing his duties, as evidenced by production on the field of play? Besides whoever deep-sixed Mark's stay at Cryami -- unless it was something drastic Mark did, or an off the field issue that would hurt their squad, say with the NCAA, I would think that besides those eventualities it is Coker's job to get 'em to get along.

I checked out the Grassy board. People that seem to know what happened won't say, only saying that it is best to not be made public. They are saying there was no NCAA violations.
