This past Saturday The Ohio State University opened Men’s Rugby Big 10 play against Illinois @ Fred Beekman Park in an evening match.
In the first half The Illini’s flyhalf was an immediate target for the Buckeyes which stirred him, resulting in struggles as he kicked into the wind often. The Buckeyes game plan materialized almost immediately by using a mixture of attacks in the hunt to find the Illini’s soft spot, understanding this would be their need in pursuit of victory.
Ian Hildebrandt would quickly tap a penalty in Illinois territory, attacking immediately. Then at the 22-meter line he offloaded to Matt Stauder whose tremendous cut inside would take him into the try zone. The kick by Tom Hurff would be good and the Buckeyes would strike first making it OSU 7 Illinois 0 after 12.
Perhaps one of the best combination plays of the night came when the Buckeyes following the restart earned a lineout at midfield. The overthrow was cleaned up by Scott Freitag then Hurff to Hildebrandt to Ronan Forestal who skipped the ball to wing Jo Jo Eramo, who took care of the matter the rest of the way – 40 meters out. He fooled the Illini wing by stepping inside and then simply out ran their fullback down the sideline, touching down between the posts. The conversion was good. The Buckeyes were up 14-0 after 15.
The 1st half would end triumphal as Mike Matthews put it down in the corner. Hurff’s kick does not convert. The Buckeyes would lead 26-10.
The 2nd Half would not be kind for the Illini. Late in the first they would lose one of their most dominant players, their Captain, flyhalf Matt Ramsey who’d have to leave late in the 1st with an ACL tear and Elijah Seay would leave as well – early in the 2nd – with a shoulder injury. Illinois, “truly” not in the match, wasn’t capable of recovering.
The Illini’s destination wasn’t to win this night – their loss’s unfortunate, wasn’t primary in the thrashing they would endure.
Which continued …
In the 2nd half the Buckeyes staked real estate in the Illini territory and soon Jo Jo Eramo would touch down in the try zone for his third try. Hurff’s conversion attempt falls short. The Buckeyes would add to their score: 31-10.
The night would only get longer for the Illini as Scott Freitag, a lock; stiff armed an outside center to guarantee his pursuit, touching down in the try zone. The conversion is good and the Buckeyes now began to surge forward: 38-10.
Arguably a highlight of distinction resulted on offloads in contact from Matthews to Forestal to Jack Walsh to Luke Fay to Jack Bengal. Bengal would be the second lock for the Buckeyes to score in an inspiring dash. 52-10 – Buckeyes.
The last try for OSU comes as time expires. Hildebrandt on a fantastic step inside would offload to Forestal. The Buckeyes would concede the kick and walk off the field with an impressively explosive victory in their Big 10 opener by battering the Illini 57-10.
The night would only be reflective of the surging dominance of The Ohio State University and their Rugby Club program. The Buckeyes are a well-coached team with talent that matches up against any of the other prominent Rugby Clubs in College today. Illinois, not a Rugby power in any definition, is still not a team to short-side. They have heart and talent; this is always to be respected. This victory moves the Buckeyes record to 1-0 in the Big 10 & opens up that important door of League play and the road to Championship rounds.
The Buckeyes take to the road next week facing Purdue.
The Boilermakers were just handed a stunning defeat by the Indiana Hoosiers on this same night that our victorious Buckeyes overpowered on their Big 10 opener.
Purdue lost 92-0.
A lot can be said by that ugly loss. But do understand there is always a new day, a new game, a new team, results are never the same. Undoubtedly the Buckeyes have a far superior team and will produce their second victory in as many games in Big 10 play when they meet up in West Lafayette with the Boilermakers. Champions clearly follow a crystal plan by imposing instruction and executing with timely precision – which this team does. These Buckeyes have top-shelf talent and are superbly coached. The results provide evidence of this.
As most of Buckeye Nation stay’s tuned to the Football sovereignty there is a great deal more to the Fall at The Ohio State University. These Buckeyes, too, are looking to be called Big 10 Champions – representing far and beyond.
Don’t be so surprised when this happens.
