MBB Pregame Glance: Ohio State vs UConn

The Ohio State Buckeyes (4-4) seek to extend their 2 game wining streak tomorrow when they tip off against the University of Connecticut (5-3) in OSU’s first true away game.. Below is a quick snapshot comparing the Buckeyes to the Huskies.

UConn 79 65 39 47.9% 35.5% 74.7%
So, what do we have? At first glance, there is really not much to separate these teams, aside from OSU’s abysmal free throw shooting percentage.
University of Connecticut
The Huskies are talented, tall and experienced. Coach Kevin Ollie has 9 players that he rotates in for at least 10 minutes per game. Two of the starters (Miller, Gibbs) are graduate students. The Huskies have only two true freshmen on this team.

The Huskies run a 3G/1F/1C lineup, their stats above. Miller (6’7″) and Brimah (7’0″) provide ample front line and post size. Swingman Daniel Hamilton (6’7″) leads the team in minutes played, scoring, rebounds and scoring. He will be a defensive challenge. Ohio State’s interior defense will be challenged by Miller and Brimah. As you can see, they are non-entities with long range shooting. However, they are brutally efficient from mid-close range, and at the foul line. Ohio State’s front line is going to have its hands full with this pair.
Ohio State
The Buckeyes will continue to get things “figured out” when they head east against UConn. This is their first “away” game where the crowd will be actively not cheering for them. I think it’s a good idea for Thad to get his youngsters on the road against a good team early in the season. The kids need to learn to play in this type of environment at some point..

This team continues to be fun to watch. As I mentioned to Joe Dexter a couple of games ago, this team is like a litter of puppies. They are young and exuberant. They’ll stumble around a bit, but you can tell they enjoy what they are doing. They may not have the fine points down, but you will get their full effort for every minute, for every game. As a fan, and as coaches, you can’t ask for anything more than that.
The game Saturday at 12:00 noon ET from Storrs, CT. The game is televised on CBS, can be heard on 97.1 or can be followed on Gametracker.
