Ohio State (7-5) sought to extend it’s non-conference winning streak to 4 games prior to entering Big Ten play versus Minnesota on Wednesday. The opponent were the South Carolina State Bulldogs (5-8) who were making the first of their three consecutive games in Ohio.
The Buckeyes got their 8th win (and 4th consecutive) with a 73-57 win over the Bulldogs. The Buckeyes were led by double-doubles by Kieta Bates-Diop (24 pts, 10) and Trevor Thompson (10, 10). Also of note, Kam Williams contributed 12 points and Mickey Mitchell scored his first points (3) of his Ohio State career.
The steady play of Bate-Diop, Thompson and Williams were a welcome balance with Marc Loving (6 pts ), JaQuan Lyle (2 pts) and Jae’Sean Tate (5 pts) having “off” nights offensively.
The Buckeyes shot 46% (26-56) from the field, 36% (8-22) from 3-pt range and 13-17 (76%) from the foul line. They had 50 rebounds, 12 of them offensive rebounds.
Buckeyes & Bulldogs back and forth through first 13 minutes with OSU holding on to a 19-17 lead. Over the next three minutes, OSU extended the lead to 26-17, then essentially holding that margin to end the half, leading 34-21. The half was The Kieta Bates Diop show, as the sophomore scored 17 points on 6-8 from the filed (5-7 3-pt range). Which was a good thing that KBD was hot, because Marc Loving and Jae’Sean Tate were non-factors on offense. Loving had no points, and Tate had 5 points & 5 rebounds.
Despite a slow start to the 2nd half (outscored 10-6 in first 8 minutes), Thad had to explain things to the Buckeyes at the under-12 to fuel a 7-1 counter-tun to Ohio State to move their lead to 48-32 at the under 10 time out. In the 2nd half, the back-court combination of A.J. Harris and Kam Williams provided the offensive spark. At the under 3 time out, fueled by a late 10-2 run the Buckeyes held a 70-48 lead.
The Buckeyes next game is Wednesday @ 7:00 PM ET at VCA. The opponent is Minnesota to open conference play. Now it gets serious.
