In the next to last game of the four game Invitational series, the Buckeyes (2-1) hosted the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (3-0) Tuesday evening. Of our two common opponents this season, so far, they beat Grambling State and Ohio State beat Grambling State, both by similar margins (high teens). LaTech beat UT-Arlington and Ohio Sate… didn’t.

The Buckeyes could not sustain significant runs, nor head off scoring runs by Louisiana Tech in tonight’s loss, 82-74. It was a young team’s performance; encouraging effort but with too many failures to close out plays at both ends of the floor. The difference, to simplify, was too many scoring opportunities allowed to LaTech and too many scoring opportunities squandered by Ohio State.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead (7-0 two minutes into the game) and except for two ties (12-12, 25-25), held the lead the entire 1st half, going into the locker room with a 42-38 lead over the Buckeyes.

For the half, Ohio State shot 46% from the field (13-28), including only (2-6) 33% from 3-pt range. They were horrid from the FT line, going 10-17 (59%). They were whistled for 9 fouls. Their offense was compromised by committing 7 turnovers.

Louisiana Tech shot 38% from the field (14-37), including (6-17) 35% from 3-pt range. They were torrid from the FT line, going 8-9 (88%). Although they were a bit too physically careless, whistled for 15 fouls, they were very careful in ball handling, committing only 2 turnovers, which is exceptionally good for an uptempo style of play.

In the 2nd half, LaTech stretched their lead to 50-42 by the under-16 timeout. However, (you remember the effort I keep mentioning?) the Buckeyes, behind Loving, Bate-Diop and Grandstaff, cut the deficit to 3 points (55-52) by the under-12 mark. So far, so good. Now the Buckeyes needed to extend their run.

They couldn’t extend. Despite having tied the game at 55, by the under-8 timeout, a Jae’Sean Tate layup was needed to close the deficit to 67-61. By the under-4 timeout, both teams held serve (not good for Ohio State) as the scoreboard read 73-67, in LaTech’s favor. In 3:43, it was over, with OSU on the short end, 82-74.

For the game, Ohio State shot 46% from the field (26-57), including only (5-14) 36% from 3-pt range. They were horrid from the FT line, going 17-27 (63%). Their offense was compromised by committing 14 turnovers. The Buckeyes grabbed 40 rebounds, 15 being offensive rebounds.

They were led by Marc Loving (25 points, 6 rebounds), Kieta Bates-Diop (12, 5), Jae’Sean Tate (10, 12) and JaQuan Lyle (10, 4).

Louisiana Tech shot 41% from the field (29-70), including (10-25) 40% from 3-pt range. They were torrid from the FT line, going 14-18 (78%). Although they were a bit too physically careless, whistled for 23 fouls, they were very careful in ball handling, committing only 8 turnovers.

Up next for the Buckeyes is a trip to Miami, FL to play the University of Memphis Tigers (3-2) on November 27th. The game is part of the National Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM ET and televised coverage will be provided by ESPN2.

A Couple Takeaways

  • This team is very much a work in progress. Missed defensive assignments, missed free throws and ball security issues were too familiar issues. LaTech were torrid from beyond the 3-pt line and OSU allowed several 2nd chance points.
  • Despite these flaws, which are teachable by the way, Ohio State played with a high level of intensity throughout the game, which is not teachable. I’d rather see the “errors of commission” by players motivated to make plays. The fine points will come.
  • Marc Loving and Jae’Sean Tate had solid performances. They were aggressive, and for the most part effective. I was encouraged seeing the veterans set an example for the newer players. It’s good to have talent, but you need to have “want to”.
