(Thad approves of his team’s performance)
The Buckeyes hosted the Huskies (Northern Illinois) Wednesday after staggering home from the Huskies (UConn) and came away with a 67-54 win. Aesthetically, this was not a pretty game, but the win was very welcome. Double-doubles by Jae’Sean Tate (17 pts, 10 rbs) and Kieta Bates-Diop (14, 10) powered the Buckeyes and they were abetted by Trevor Thompson (10, 8).
It was a bit of an odd game. Of Tate’s 10 rebounds, there were no offensive rebounds. For someone who grubs around the offense boards, I thought this was unusual. The other “oddity” was that Marc Loving was held, or rather “held” himself to 8 points. It wasn’t for a lack of effort, since his 12 FG attempts were second only to Tate’s 13. It was lack of accuracy, he was only 3-12 from the field.
Ohio State was pretty ‘meh’ from the field, shooting 39% and about the same from 3-pt range (40%). Their free throw shooting woes continued as they shot 63% (9-30). The Buckeyes collected 44 rebounds (12 offensive) which was a bright spot. With both teams shooting a combined 33% (35-106) there are a lot of rebounds to be had.
Fortunately, the Buckeyes, other than a few lapses, played solid defense by holding Northern Illinois to 26% from the field and 27% from beyond the arc. The Huskies were led by Marin Maric (17 pts, 9 rbs) and Marshawn Wilson (16, 4).
The Buckeyes (5-5) moved back to .500 for the season, which is a good thing since their next game is Saturday at 3:30 PM ET against Kentucky in the CBS Sports Classic. The game will obviously be broadcast on CBS, can be heard on 97.1 and followed on Gametracker.
