(Thad approves of his team’s performance)

The Buckeyes evened their record to 4-4 on Tuesday night with a 74-50 win over the Air Force Falcons. This game was never really in doubt for Ohio State as they ran to a 37-16 halftime lead, then held Air Force at arm’s length in the 2nd half (37-34) to secure their 2nd consecutive win. The difference was OSU’s aggressive offense that outscored AF by a margin of 38-18 “in the paint”. Both teams scored 11 points off turnovers, both had 6 ‘2nd chance’ points and AF’s bench narrowly outscored OSU’s 21-19.

Speaking of “bench”, I want to applaud AF coach Dave Pilipovich and OSU’s Thad Matta for going deep into their respective benches at the end of the game. Pilipovich included Upper Arlington native, freshman guard Danny Hummer, on his travel squad for this game. It was Hummer’s first action of the season, and in his 3 minutes in front of his home crowd, scored 2 points and grabbed an offensive rebound. That’s a class move by Coach Pilipovich. Meanwhile, Thad put freshman walk-on Joey Lane into the game for 4 minutes. Lane was 1-2 from the free throw line.

The Buckeyes were led by Marc Loving’s 2nd consecutive double-double (a double double-double?) of 18 points and 10 rebounds. He was ably supported by JaQuan Lyle (12 pts) and Jae’Sean Tate (11 pts).

As a team, the Buckeyes shot 47% from the floor, 27% from 3-pt range (ooph) and 78% from the free throw line (good!). They turned the ball over 12 times, which wasn’t too good, but with freshmen ball handlers, that is going to happen; no need to get excited at this point. Fortunately, OSU forced AG into 18 T/Os, so the ball security issue wasn’t that much of an issue. Like Air Force, Ohio State had 35 rebounds, but OSU had only 5 offensive rebounds. With 30 missed shots, 5 offensive boards isn’t too good. With putting a lineup that at various times had players ranging from 6’7″ – 6’11”, the Buckeyes need to do better than that.

However, Thad has to be pleased with his team’s defensive performance, particularly in the 1st half. During the first 20 minutes, OSU held AF to only 16 points on 22% shooting. The Falcons did better in the 2nd half, shooting 42%, but the Buckeye defense had already tightened the screws. It was too little, too late for Air Force.
