Man Catches Fire After Taser Probe Ignites Lighter

POSTED: 3:04 pm EST February 22, 2006
UPDATED: 5:33 pm EST February 22, 2006

A man in Daytona Beach, Fla., was injured when a probe from a police Taser gun hit a butane lighter in his pocket and set him on fire, according to a Local 6 News report.

Police said Dennis Crouch, 54, apparently stabbed himself inside his home located in the 400 block of Grandview Avenue.

When officers arrived at the house, they found Crouch with a butcher knife threatening to kill himself.

Crouch apparently refused to comply with officers demands and was shot with a Taser gun.

A Taser probe hit a disposable butane lighter in his shirt pocket and ignited. Officers then rolled him to the ground to put out the flames.

Crouch was treated at Halifax Medical Center for burns and the stab wound.

The incident is under investigation to determine if additional safety requirements, Local 6 News reported.

Let me get this straight. He was threatening to kill himself, and had even stabbed himself a time or two. He wasn't cooperating, so the Po-po tasered him. The taser started him on fire, and the police put him out, presumably because he either still wanted to die, or the taser rendered him incapable of putting the fire out himself.

Yeah, that sounds like grounds for a lawsuit. I'm guessing this dude ends up winning a nice chunk of Daytona Beach, Florida.

The first thing I thought of also was that he'd sue. We can only hope the case gets thrown out.

Meh, he shouldnt smoke, and he shouldnt do things to get tased. case dismissed.

Smoking is legal. Whether the guy smokes should have no impact on whether the case gets dismissed.

However, I do agree with your second statement. If he deserves a good tasing (we can argue about what "deserves a good tasing" means), I don't think I could be on his side.

If he were to win a lawsuit, someone could simply make an entire vest out of lighters and be virtually taser-proof.

Good idea...

New example of fire and tasers!

Police are investigating the firey death of a man who burst into flames after dousing himself in petrol and then being shot with a taser gun.
Officers used the gun after the man had poured gasoline over himself.

They also think it might have had something to do with the lighter, on the porch, behind the guy. :shake:
