LOS ANGELES (AP)—Mike Dunleavy is out as general manager of the Los Angeles Clippers, barely a month after relinquishing his head coaching duties.
The team announced it severed ties with Dunleavy late Tuesday afternoon in an e-mail. Assistant general manager Neil Olshey will take over Dunleavy’s job.
The team says in a statement that it hasn’t made sufficient progress during Dunleavy’s seven years, and the Clippers want to win now.
The Clippers are 12th in the Western Conference standings with a 25-38 record and have lost three in a row. They are just 7-24 on the road.
Dunleavy stepped down as head coach on Feb. 4, and was replaced by assistant Kim Hughes
The Los Angeles Clippers have decided to hire Vinny Del Negro as their next head coach, multiple league sources with knowledge of the team’s plans told Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday night.
Del Negro’s agent Lon Rosen later confirmed the agreement.
“We have a deal in principle,” Rosen said.
Del Negro was fired by the Chicago Bulls in May after going 82-82 in two seasons and making two postseason appearances. Del Negro and Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Dwane Casey were finalists for the job and had second interviews in Los Angeles on Monday.
Mike Dunleavy stepped down as the Clippers’ coach midway through last season and continued as general manager until he was eventually fired. Dunleavy’s assistant Kim Hughes finished the season as interim coach.
Del Negro made a good impression on Clippers owner Donald Sterling and other team officials when he interviewed last week.
The $2.3 million the Bulls owe Del Negro for next season will be offset by his first-year salary with the Clippers.
