AJ being a semifinalist for the Lombardi award was mentioned in an article posted in another thread, but it was confusing since the headline stated 'finalist'. He is one of 12 semifinalists shown below.

Right now, imo, the guys that have the best shot at the award besides AJ, are Dumervil, Kiwanuka, and Posluszny.

It's hard to judge defensive players by numbers, but that's what some voters will do.

AJ has 68 tackles, 8 TFL with 3.5 sacks, 1 forced fumple, 1 pick, 1 recovery.
Dumervil has 40 tackles, 16.5 TFL with 16 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, 1 pick, 1 recovery.
Kiwanuka has 23 tackles. 4.5 TFL with 3.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 highlight reel play running down Lorenzo Booker.
Posluszny has 82 tackes, 6.5 TFL with 2 sacks, 0 interceptions and 0 fumble recoveries.

A.J.'s game against Texas will stick in voters' minds. Plus the fact that he still excels on the top rushing defense in the country which has other NFL caliber players, rather than being the sole star on a defense like several other sem-finalists.

I did a little research on all the semi-finalists who are defensive players, and got the rushing and total defense stats for each of their teams. To me, truly great defensive players excel on great defenses...it's easy for a decent defender to look great on a less-than-great defense. I listed rushing first since that's a better indicator of lineman/linebacker impact. I included total defense to indicate how well his impact contributes to the defense as a whole.

Hawk, LB (Ohio State):
Rushing #2
Total #9

Dumervil, DE/DT (Louisville):
Rushing #42
Total #35

Havner, LB (UCLA):
Rushing #114
Total #89

Kiwanuka, BE (Boston College)
Rushing #5
Total #8

Mahelona, DE (Tennessee)
Rushing #12
Total #16

Posluszny, LB (Penn State)
Rushing #17
Total #23

Ryans, DE (Alabama)
Rushing #10
Total #5

Thomas, DE (Wisconsin)
Rushing #78
Total #87

Winston, DE (Miami, FL)
Rushing #16
Total #1

Wright, DT (Texas)
Rushing #9
Total #3

To me, you can scratch Havner and Thomas since UCLA's and Wisconsin's defense are jokes. You can add Dumervil, since Louisville's defense isn't exactly tearing it up in the "powerhouse" C-USA.

The ones that stand out in their contribution to a great defense are Hawk, Kiwanuka, Ryans, and Wright.

It's true that Thomas isn't adding much to Wisky's defense, since he's an OT. :wink2:

Sorry I didn't notice it before, but the graphic I copied in from the Lombardi Award site has his position listed incorrectly.

And Louisville's 'D' may be fairly sad, but anybody with 16 sacks and 7 forced fumbles is a threat to win the award.

Is it me or does this guy look like Joe Germaine on steroids?
